9th Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters

Thomas Benjamin Nichols was my 2nd great grand-uncle. He was a private in Company B of the 9th Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters. He was captured on November 25th, 1863 at the Battle of Missionary Ridge and sent to P.O.W. camp at Louisville, KY.

Joined 1861. Records show him in Company D and/or Company A. Captured 4 Jan 1865 Itawamba County,Missisippi. Records show that he was transferred to Camp Chase Ohio. It is not clear that he actually reached Camp Chase Ohio. Release 18 Jun 1865 Three of his brothers, James, Archibald, and William served in other Mississippi Regiments. After the war John Edwin returned the family business of carriage making as a carriage painter. When he married he followed his in-laws out to San Jose California. His carriage painting shop was located at what is now the HP Pavilion. John Edwin Christy is buried at Oak Hill in San Jose, his grave is about 150 yards from the GAR burial area.

Private, Company B, 9th Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters. KIA in Battle of New Hope Church, Paulding, Georgia 31 May 1864. Fletcher enlisted on the same day and in the same unit as his brother, Robert Herbert (wounded in the Battled of Chickamauga)

Originally enlisted Private, Company C, 44th Mississippi Infantry, transferred to Company B, 9th Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters (same company as his brother, James Fletcher Conner). Robert 'Bob' was wounded twice - once at Chickamauga and again during the Battle of Atlanta on 22 Jul 1864, blinding him. He later fathered Major General Fox Conner, Chief of Operations, American Expeditionary Forces, Europe, WWI

1836-1871 Enlisted in Company E, 44th Mississippi Inf in July 1861. Transferred to the Sharpshooters in June 62. Wounded at Pickett's Mill 27 May 1864, did not return to service.

My Uncle - Original enlistment at age 16 at Liberty, Miss 14Nov61, mustered in to Co.K 44th Miss infantry at Natchez. Serving for seven months until transferring to 9th Battalion Miss Sharp Shooters 23June62. Never missed a muster roll and re-enlisted for the War 24Jan64 at Dalton, Ga. - Killed in action 13May64 at Reseca, Ga. What more can I say?

Transferred from 7th Mississippi Infantry Regiment on 26 June 1862. Wounded on 25 November 1863 at Missionary Ridge, TN. Deserted on 9 May 1864.

Frank Wilkinson is my cousin. He and his brother, Jefferson W Wilkinson, joined Co. C 7th Regt. Miss. Inf. in Amite County. Jeff was killed at Shiloh. Frank was selected to Chalmers' Brigade Sharpshooters (9th Battn. Miss. SS). He survived the war. His other brothers, Micajah (2nd Miss. Militia 'state troops' Quinn's) and John Cain Wilkinson (Co. K 33rd Miss. Inf.), also survived the war.
