2nd Mississippi Infantry "Quinn's" (State Troops)

Samuel served first in the third Miss. Infantry assigned to Vicksburg. He served through the Vicksburg campaign and siege. He joined Lomax's Company. Miss light Artillery after his Vicksburg parole. The company was stationed at Meridian and was sent to Mobile when an attack from Baton Rouge was anticipated by Confederate Authorities. The company was found to be insufficient for infantry duty owing to the fact that a large majority of the men were old and infirm. The company was organized as an artillery unit, but was never equipped as such. The company was disbanded on 31 October 1864. Mary Nolen Brister filed for a Confederate Veteran Widow pension and stated that Samuel had served in the 18th Mississippi Inf until the end of the war. He was paroled at Appomatox, Va.

Born 1815 Pulaski County Georgia. Records show promoted to 5 Sergeant - the form shows no 5th? Enlisted July 16, 1862 at Monticello. Discharged by order for being over age. January 31, 1863.

Ezekiel traveled from Texas to join Confederate service with his friends and family in Mississippi in 1861. His records are provided at Film number M232 roll 33, Civil War Soldier & Sailors System (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/). He was born 1820 in Alabama and died 1905 in Llano County, Texas. Ezekiel was one of my cousins on my father's maternal side. He was brother to my GGGGrandfather Samuel Reed, Jr.

This was my great, great, great, grand father. Born 2-15-1816 in Lawrence County, MS and died on 5-18-1917 in Lincoln County MS. He was discharged in November of 1862 due to health conditions and re entered in the spring of 1863 and served out the rest of the war. He went home to his beloved third wife Mary Ann (Polly) Goodwin. He applied for pension in 1914. After living over 100 years he is buried in Union Baptist Church Cememtery in Lincoln County MS, just east of Brookhaven. Ellis and two of his Brothers, Thomas, and Hugh boyt, jumped at the chance to fight for the Southern Cause. I am a member of The Sons of Confederate Veterans reenacting organization in Oak Grove, Louisiana located in West Carroll Parish. I put on that wool for my ancestors and march proudly for their name. This is Ellis Pasemore's brother. Records show that they joined up on the same day. Hugh had a twin but no records of him ever serving have been found.

Company C – Amite County Minute Men. Butler, J.W. 4th/3rd Sgt, drafted 12 Jul 1862, deserted 7 Dec 1862, returned 20 Feb 1863. This record fits with the family story that JW went home for a short visit to his pregnant wife. Union troops surrounded the area outside his home and he was unable to return to his unit. He hid out in the hills near Brushy Creek (behind his home) for nearly 3 months. He hid in the red clay hills and spent daylight there, carving a wooden chair out of nearby brush. Some nights he was able to sneak home and visit his family. The baby, JW Jr., was born on Feb. 6. JW Senior was able to return to his unit 2 weeks later.

Jefferson was born 1 Nov 1815 in South Carolina, his family moved West and thru Alabama into Mississippi. The 1860 census finds him at age 44 in Jasper County; the Post Office is at Paulding. He enlists at Paulding in Co D 2nd State Troops 30-days on 23 Aug. 1864 at age 48. He is sick and is sent home on 9 Sept for 12 days by surgeons' certificate. He died 17 June 1887 in Jasper County, Miss.

James was born in Covington County, Miss 14 May 1826. He died 10 Oct 1907 in Eucutta, Wayne Co. Miss. He enlisted at age 34 on 18 July 1862 at Williamsburg, enlisted by Major Brown and elected 3rd Sergeant. He has two cards in his archival file. The second cared states that he was discharged 2 August 1862. No reason was given. He would have been in camp training at that time. He was the maternal grandfather of wife of stepson of 4th Cousin 4 x removed..

Jesse was born in 1815 in Oglethorpe, Macon Georgia. He Married my cousin Mary A Gandy x3 from Society Hill, Darlington Co. SC. He was about 45 years old when he joined as a Pvt. In Co D 2nd Regiment Mississippi [State Troops] Quinn's, on 18 July 1862 at Williamsburg. Enlisted by Major Brown. Jesse has only 3 cards in his archival file. Tyree / Tyra enlisted 23 Aug. 1864 in Jasper Co. Miss in the 2nd Regiment, Infantry Mississippi State Troops for 30 Days. 1864. He is the husband of my 3rd cousin 3x removed. Temperance Thomas. Their are only two cards in his file.. Many of his family served in this unit.

James Lem. entered the Confederate Service as a private in the Mississippi State Troops after the war moved to Arkansas, then on to Texas.

I have been searching for the family of this man after 1860 and have never been able to find anyone. Would be most happy to receive any information about Thomas W Cartwright from DeSoto County, MS.

Great Great Grandfather joined in Marion Ms.I believe the unit called themselves the Marion Grays. .

James was born in Marion Co. Miss 5 June 1846. He was to young for active military service. He enlisted at Columbia, Marion Co. Miss. in Co G 2nd Regiment [Quinn's State Troops for 12 months on 21 July 1862. He has four cards in his archival file. This unit was an on call regiment. It saw duty at Vicksburg and fought in skirmishes in Mississippi as the invaders ran amuck in the area. He died 17 Oct 1921 and is buried in Oak Shade Baptist Cemetery, Cleveland, Liberty Co. Texas. He is in my ancestry tree and we are kin by a distant marriage.

Seaborn is one of my 3rd-great grandfathers. Born on 21 May 1818, he was 43 years old when the war broke out in 1861. He was compelled to join when the original Confederate draft law of April 1862 was expanded in September 1862 to include all healthy white males between the ages of 18 and 45. By then he was only 44 and within the draft age range. Although Seaborn's name appears as a member of company G, family knowledge relates that he never actually joined the army. He paid a man by the name of Burrow to join as 'Seaborn Morris'. The most plausible person that could have been was a 55-year old Marion County, MS resident by the name of John Burrow. There is no evidence that John Burrow ever enlisted in any Mississippi or Confederate military units. 'Seaborn Morris' had a very short military career. He enlisted in Columbia, Marion County, MS on 21 July 1862 and was discharged on 15 August 1862 for 'disease of the hand received in camps'. Meanwhile, the real Seaborn Morris hid out from state and Confederate conscription authorities, who were likely not fooled for too long by the Burrow illegal substitution. According to Seaborn's own account many years later as an older man, he had a one-room, windowless and doorless cabin in a remote location in the woods in which he stayed during this time. His escape hatch was a trap door built into the floor of the cabin, which would allow him to slip out and underneath the raised floor of the cabin if anyone ever discovered his hidden abode. During this time he would supplement his diet with fishing. He primarily used catalpa worms, from catalpa trees in the area around his hideout, as his bait. In his latter years (he was 96 when he died in 1914), he declared this to be the saddest period in his life because 2 of his little girls died during this time. The first daughter to die was 14-year old Sarah Matilda who died 2 October 1862. The second was 5-year old little Mary who died on 2 November 1864. Since he was a wanted man by the authorities, he couldn't dare go near either his house or the funerals during this time. His hideout was close enough that he could hear the girls caskets being built and the funeral attendees singing hymns at the graveside. But he was unable to either console himself or his wife and children due to his precarious situation.

Jesse B Causey is buried in the Wesson Cemetery in Wesson, MS. His grave is marked with a military marker stating his regiment and unit. Co. H 2nd MS INF. He is also listed on the roster as a Private.

Burrell Fortenberry was born in 1820 in Pike County, Mississippi. He first served in Quinn's State Troops and later transferred to Wingfield's 9th Louisiana Calvary. He was at Port Hudson during the siege and once paroled he went home. His brother's bible says he died September 14, 1863. His grandson noted that he died of exposure in the war.
