Enlisted in Company A, Missouri 3rd Cavalry Regiment. Promoted to Full Asst Surgeon on 13 Jul 1864. Mustered out on 13 Jul 1864 at Fort Smith, AR. Commissioned an officer in Company S, Arkansas 2nd Infantry Regiment on 13 Jul 1864. Mustered out on 08 Aug 1865

James V. Crowder was from Pleasant Hill, Illinois. He enlisted March 1, 1862 in Louisiana, Missouri. Mustered in March 22, 1862 at Louisiana, Missouri under Captain S.A.C. Bartlett. Served in eastern Missouri. Company C was at Centerville, Missouri in December, 1863 and was captured by Confederate Timothy Reeves of 15th Missouri Cavalry. The company was rescued by Major James Wilson on Christiams day 1863. James fought with the 3rd MSM at the Battle of Pilot Knob. He died of disease in a military hospital in St. Louis on December 17, 1864. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

NEW 3rd Missouri Stae Militia Cavalry Regiment (reorganized February 2nd, 1863).

Isaac was a volunteer private in the Third Regiment of the State Militia Cavalry, having enlisted 25 Jan 1862 at Troy, Missouri, when he was 25 years of age. His papers indicate that he was 5'8' in height, a farmer by occupation. He was mustered in 15 Feb 1862 at Warrenton, Missouri. Isaac was involved in skirmishes near Pilot Knob, Iron County between the 17th and 27th of September, 1864. He was killed in action 23 Sep 1864 while serving as a guard on a wagon train carrying supplies from Sturgeon to Rocheport. Isaac's service record indicates that he was killed by guerrillas. The guerrilla group which attached the Union wagon supply train included 17-year-old Jesse James. This attack on the sparsely guarded wagon train resulted in what was reputed to be James' first killing of his outlaw career. The attack is recorded as a Civil War action in Boone Co., Missouri. Isaac left his widow, Nancy and a small son, John. Nancy was remarried to John Baxter and subsequently had three additional children. Through his son John, Isaac has today many descendants.
