8th Missouri Infantry

Appointed by General Order Number 72, 3 NOV 1861, as Lt.Colonel, Aid de Camp for General Price. Acting Chief of Ordnance for State Guard, Special Order Number 225, 17 DEC 1861, General Price Orderly Book.

Out of the four brothers to fight during the Civil War on the Brundridge family living in Missouri. he was the only one to enlist in to the CSA. He enlisted in to the Confederate army on August 5, 1862 in Oregon County,Missouri. Records show when Little Rock Ark. fell to Union hands he was left in one of the hopitals and died on August 5 1863, from either wounds or disease and is buried in one of the more than three thousand unkown graves in or near the Little Rock National Cemetery. On his muster roll papers show his name was spelled many ways, Brundege,Brundridge,Brundidge,Bronrade and Brundrige.

Enlisted: Eleven Points Hill, Oregon Co., MO, 07 August 1862 Elected: 1st Lieutenant, 07 August 1862. Mustered-In: Thomasville, Oregon Co., MO, 07 August 1862. Age: 40 years Last appears as 'Escaped,' from U.S. Small Pox Hospital, St. Louis, MO, 11 August 1865. Four of the original papers pertain to imprisonment following the war (August 1865). Remarks by his Federal captors call him a 'guerilla,' accuse him of 'murder', and recommend that when moving him to transport him 'under strong guard... he will escape at any cost'

Jasper Gentry joined the unit in August, 1862, made 2nd. Sgt in 1863 and 1st Sgt. of Company B in 1864. He was in the last group to surrender in May 1865 and was paroled from the P.O.W. facility at Alexandria, Louisiana June 7, 1865.

KY-born G.B.Harris was from Phelps County, Missouri and signed up at the age of 42. His farm was south of Rolla, Missouri near Vida/Yancey Mills, an area know for its strong Confederate leanings. Enlisted at Thomasville, MO August 7, 1862 and served until his surrender June 7, 1865 in Louisiana. Fought at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Ark.. He is mentioned several times in the book, 'Serving with Honor' by Capt. Eathan Pinnell of the 8th MO Inf.(edited by Michael Banasik). After the surrender, he returned home and by the 1870's, he was active in the Greenback Party and become a local patriach. Was known as Uncle Berry Harris to those around him. Died between 1887 and 1890. Buried in Huskey Cemetery next to his wife, Mary 'Polly' Anne Harris.

Fought at Wilson's Creek,Lexington, and Dry Woods, MO. Enlisted 7 Aug 1862 at Thomasville, MO. Promoted to Color Sergeant on 31 Oct 1862. Surrendered 7 June 1865 at New Orleans, Paroled at Shreveport, LA. Took Oath of Allegiance at St Louis, MO 19 Jun 1865 ( I have a copy), mentioned several times in Capt. Pinnell's book 'Serving with Honor'.

James Marion Hawkins lived on Dry Fork south of St James, Phelps co Mo. He enlisted Aug. 8 1862 at Thomasville. He was Corp. in the color guard and was carrying the regimental flag at the battle of Plesant Hill La. when he was mortaly wounded.

Enlisted on Aug 7, 1862 in Oregon County. Surrendered on 26 May 1856 in New Orleans, La. and was paroled at Alexanderia, La on 7 June 1865.

Henry S lived in Missouri, but his company papers list him as enlisting at Fulton Co., Arkansas. He was a Private. He was taken prisoner July 2, 1862, but I don't know where he was held. He was exchanged on December 7th, 1862. He last appears as re-joining his regiment on January, 20th, 1863. No records have been found showing what happened to him. Apparently killed. His family shows back up in the 1870 census in Licking, Missouri with Henry S. missing. His son it is believed joined with him. He was taken prisoner also. No record has been found about him either. His name was Samuel Elliott/Elliett..same company..same place enlisted.

Robert Lafayette Windle was my 2nd great grand uncle. He was born in Overton TN in 1841 & the family moved to Missouri shortly after. He enlisted in Co. F. 8th Missouri Infantry, C.S.A. in 1863. He was one of the last residents of the Higginsville Missouri Confederate Home when he died there in 1928. The Home closed shortly after. He's buried in the Confederate soldiers cemetery on the homes grounds.

Severely wounded in the arm at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. He died sometime after the battle either in Arkansas or back at home in Newton County, Missouri.

John S. Sturdy enlisted in Burn's 8th MO Inf in 1862 with his brothers Marion, Ferril, & James, then in '63 transferred to 11th MO Inf with Marion. James and Ferril transferred to the 4th MO Cavalry, CSA.
