11th Missouri Infantry

Enlisted at Keetsville, Barry County, Missouri. Captured by Union forces shortly after the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas.

Enlisted on 21 July 1862 at Camp Cedar with Company A of Hunter's Battalion of the 11th Missouri Infantry (other researchers have 1861 which is incorrect). It is believed that he served as a private without being wounded in the Tennessee and Mississippi Departments until he and his unit surrendered at New Orleans on 26 May 1865. He continued as a prisoner of war until paroled at Shreveport, Louisiana on 8 Jun 1865.

William was born 25 Aug 1834 in Morgan County Illinois. His family moved Missouri when William was about eight years old. He enlisted in the 11th Missouri Infantry 10 Nov 1862.

Enlisted at Keetsville 07 August 1862. Discharged with disability 16 September 1862 (Compiled military service file, James Hedrick, Pvt., Co. B, 11th Missouri Inf.; Carded Records, Volunteer Organizations, Civil War; NATF 86, National Archives, Washington, D.C.). Never received a pension because he moved to California and died in 1910 and Missouri did not give pensions until 1911, and then only to indigent veterans.

His brothers, George and William, fought for the Missouri Calvary on the Union side.

Began as drummer when his brother Capt. J.S Herriford joined. Captured & exchanged,mustered out as Cpl. at Chattanooga.

Born October 21, 1845 in Barry County, Missouri to Robert W. and Mary (Perkins) Logan, Monroe joined the 11th Infantry with his Logan and McWilliams cousins. He served honorably until the end of the war and died September 3, 1923 in Barry County, Missouri.

Born in Lafayette County, Missouri September 25, 1841, Dave enlisted with his brother G.W. Dave served through the war and was surrendered at New Orleans in 1865. He moved with the family to Texas after the war, married and raised a large family, dying in 1924.

December 24, 1832 in Lafayette County, Missouri G. W. was born to Joseph Allison and Jedidah (Perkins) McWilliams. He married M.E. Hamblin in 1855 in Missouri but had moved his famly to Texas before the war. When the war came he was returning to Missouri when his wife died giving birth to their youngest son in Arkansas. G.W. took his children back to his mother in Barry County, Missouri and enlisted in 1862 along with his brother and two cousins. During the war he grew a long beard which he retained the rest of his life and it is told that when he returned home his children were afraid of him because they didn't recognize him with the beard. After the War he moved his family including his parents to Fannin County, Texas where he remarried and raised a large family. He died August 8, 1901 and his wife Charlotte filed for a pension with the state of Texas.

The son of Robert Biggan and Sarah Ann (Norris) Perkins, Robert served in Captain John Herriford's Company, Col. Hunter's 11th Infantry. He was born in 1836 in Missouri and died April 20, 1923 in Crawford County, Arkansas.

Thomas was born 21 April 1840 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County Tennessee. In 1860 he is 20 years old and living in Sugar Creek, Barry County, Missouri. The Post Office is at Washburn Prairie. He has five cards in his archival file. He enlisted in Barry County on 1 Aug. 1862 by Capt. John S. Herriford for 3 years. The 11th saw action at Lone Jack, Missouri, Prairie Grove, Battle of Helena, Ark and in several battles in the Red River Campaign: Pleasant Hill, Mansfield and Jenkins Ferry. The 11th was active from 31 Aug 1862 until 8 June 1865 when it was paroled at Shreveport La. After parole the survivors were sent by steamboat back to Missouri. There was only one significant fact noted on his CMR's other than being present and that was he was granted a 30-day home leave beginning on 17 April 1863. Thomas died 7 Nov 1915 in Elk City, Beckham County, Oklahoma and is buried at that place in Fairlawn Cemetery. He was the father-in-law to my 3rd cousin 4 x removed.

This is my 4th Great Grandfather. He enlisted underage at 15 years old. Clothing and food was poor, he got sick many times and I believe he was wounded at one or two battles in the 11th Missouri.

Alfred Portervyne Donnell was the son of John Donnell and Elizabeth Davidson. He was born 30 September 1829 in Wilson Co., Tennessee and died 26 December 1896 in Van Alstyne, Grayson Co., Texas. He was the brother of James Davidson Donnell who also served in this unit.

James Davidson Donnell was my great great grandfather. He was born on 15 February 1812 in Wilson Co., Tennnessee and died 28 February 1878 in Eliasville, Young Co., Texas.

Lemuel Amzi Donnell was a school teacher by profession. He was born in Wilson Co., Tennessee on 6 March 1839 and died 2 February 1911 in Seymour, Baylor Co., Texas. He was the son of John 'Calvin' Donnell and Martha Safrona Witherspoon. He was known as 'L. A.' Donnell, and there is a sketch of his service in the CSA in the book Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray, 1861-1865 by Miss Mamie Yeary (copyright 1912). In this sketch he states that he enlisted in the Confederate Army August 26, 1861 in Hickory Co., MO as First Lieutenant in Company F, Hale's Battalion, Raines' Brigage, Price's Division and that his first Captain was B. F. Massey. In 1862 he re-enlisted in Company D, Eleventh Missouri Volunteers in which he served until the end of the war.

Leo Wilson (or Wilson Leo) was the oldest child of James Davidson Donnell and Juliet Waters. He was born 30 June 1833 in Wilson Co., Tennessee and he died 25 January 1863 at Camp Holcomb near Little Rock, Arkansas. He left a widow, Melissa Palmer Donnell, and two sons, Millard Fillmore Donnell and William Franklin Donnell.

Thomas Franklin Donnell was my great grandfather. He was born 21 September 1838 in Wilson Co., TN (son of James Davidson Donnell and Juliet Waters). He died in Eliasville, Young Co., Texas on 8 March 1906. He participated in the battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on 9 April 1864 where he was wounded severely in the ankle. Family tradition says he lay wounded on the battlefield all night. Amputation was recommended, but he would not hear of it.

William Leander Donnell was the son of James Davidson Donnell. He was born 25 October 1836 in Wilson Co., Tennessee and died on 25 July 1914 in Eliasville, Young Co., Texas.

Born in 1846 in Barry County, Missouri, William served with his brother and numerous cousins in the 11th. He was captured at the battle of Helena July 4, 1863 and died of smallpox September 15, 1863 at he prison at Alton, Madison County, Illinois

Jesse was the son of Robert Biggan and Sarah Ann (Norris) Perkins. Born December 23, 1828 in Missouri he enlisted in 1862 but moved to Texas with a discharge because of disability in 1863. He died in Crawford County, Arkansas before

John James Robertson (aka Jack) was born 27 April 1846 in Benton Co., Missouri to Richard I. and Sarai (Foster) Robertson. His name appears on the roster for Company D, 11th Missouri Infantry with a notation of 'music' beside his name. As you might have calculated, he was a little young at the time of the Civil War, but most likely he was not completely truthful about his age at enlistment. He died in Breckenridge, Stephens Co., Texas on 12 January 1933. He was my great grandmother's brother.

John S. Sturdy enlisted in 8th MO Inf in 1862 with his brothers Marion, Ferril, & Jasper, then transferred to 11th MO Inf with Marion.

1831-1863 Captured at the Battle of Helena, 4 July 1863. Died of smallpox in Alton Military Prison in Illinois on 27 Aug 1863.

Fought at Wilson's Creek, Lexington, Pea-RIDGE, Corinth, IUKA, Helena, Cane Hill, was taken prisoner at Pleasant Hill and later Exchanged. Paroled June 1. 1865. Died in 1897 in Harrisonville Missouri, at his request Franse is buried in a suit of gray
