Enrolled in 78th EMM on August 6, 1862 in Fredericktown, MO as a second lieutenant. This was vacated by Special Order 126 in 1864. He was 23 years old at the time of his enrollment as second lieutenant. His two older brothers, Thomas J. (age 30) and William Pirtle (age 28), enrolled in the 78th EMM on the same day as privates. James is my great-great uncle. I am descended from his youngest brother, Isaac Jasper Pirtle, who was too young to serve in the war

Enrolled as a private in Fredericktown, MO on August 6, 1862. His younger brother William Pirtle enrolled as a private on the same day as did their younger brother James Pirtle who enrolled as second lieutenant. Thomas Jefferson Pirtle is believed to have been killed by Confederate guerrillas near Fredericktown around September 24, 1864. He died leaving a wife, Susanah Cox Pirtle, and three young children near Womack, St. Francois County, Missouri. Thomas is my great-great uncle. I am descended from his youngest brother, Isaac Jasper Pirtle, who was too young to serve in the war

Served the Union Army in Co. K, 78th Mo. E.M.M. as bugler. Service was from October 1, 1860, to December, 1864. After the war he was a member of J. Felix St. James Post 326 G.A.R. (Born in Augen, Amt Millheim, Baden, Germany on May 9, 1832, and died in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri February 18, 1916. (Information taken from his obituary) NOTE: His name has been incorrectly recorded as Jacob Laibin (instead of Laiben) in the Missouri Archives....I'm trying to get it fixed!
