Marion was my great great grandfather and the Nephew of Adam Hampton Searcy.

Need Info on 62nd Reg... Have discharge papers for 6 months due to illness signed by Col. Jno F. Colton ( or Cotton )sp? and have been unable to find further verification on his service.

Daniel J. Cook, my 3rd Great Grandfather, enlisted on July 14, 1862 and was assigned to Company A, 62nd North Carolina Infantry. He was captured and taken Prisoner of War on September 9, 1863 at Cumberland Gap. He was transferred to Camp Douglas outside of Chicago, Illinois where he remained until his release on June 15, 1865. Prior to, and after the war, he resided in Little Cataloochee, Haywood County, North Carolina. His property is now part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and his residence, known as the "Dan Cook Cabin", is on the registry of historic places. He along with his wife, Harriett, are buried in the cemetery at Little Cataloochee Baptist Church.

Jackson was my Great Great Grandfather.

Pvt. Robert Washington Corzine b. 12 Nov 1833, Cabarrus County, NC d. 28 Jun 1915, Haywood County, NC. Co C, 62nd NC Regiment. Enlisted at age 28 on 12 July 1862. Captured at Cumberland Gap, TN on 9 Sep 1863. Sent to Louisville, Ky and then moved to Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL on 26 Sep 1863. Released after taking Oath of Allegiance on 15 Jun 1865. Buried in Reeves Cemetery, Waynesville, Haywood County, NC. Brother to Capt. David Morrison Corzine Co C, 33rd NC and Pvt. James C. Corzine Co C, 33rd NC. Robert being from Concord, NC has many family members including parents buried at Cold Water Baptist Church, Concord, Cabarrus County, NC.

Found confederate capture report. Was taken prisoner Setember 9th 1863 at the Cumberland Gap.

Justice, James M., Private Company E, 62nd North Carolina Infantry No further info at this time.

Adolphus McCrary was captured at Carter’s Depot on Dec. 30, 1862, exchanged on an unspecified date probably in March of 1863.He deserted the Confederate 62nd N.C. Infantry Regiment, Co. E, on 3-28-1863. He enlisted in the Union 2nd N.C. Mounted Infantry, Co. H, on 11-1-1863. He deserted the Union Army on 4-20-1864. There is no record of his return to duty, but he appears to have been a prisoner of war and restored. There is an unreadable document from the Record and Pension Office that may have included his restoration.

Conscripted at age 23 in at Brevard, mustered into Co E on 14 Jul 1862. Deserted 10 May 1863 from Greenville, TN. No further record. Was my GGgrandfather(maternal).

Gettys, Robert Ramsey, Private Company F, 62nd North Carolina Infantry Enlisted in Rutherford County on October 8, 1862, for the war. Reported present through October 31, 1862. Captured and paroled at Zollicofer, Tennessee, December 30, 1862. “Cut his toes off” on February 23, 1863 (while at home awaiting exchange). Exchanged in March 1863. Reported absent sick through December 31, 1863. Name appears on a receipt roll for clothing dated August 25, 1864. No further records. Survived the war. Born: October 18, 1829 Died: April 15, 1915 in Burke Co., NC Buried: Pinnacle Methodist, McDowell Co., NC Married: Sarah Elizabeth Toney Children: 10 Occupation: unknown

William F. Halford was from Rutherford Co. NC and served in the Confederate Army until captured and taken to Camp Douglas Ill. where he died of the harsh conditions. His name is on the memorial there. He was born on 8/14/1842 to Thomas and Sarah Halford of the Bill's Creek Community of Rutherford Co. William died on 2/6/1864 at Camp Douglas.

Fifer... Son of Reverend Cornelius & Nancy Brown Livingston. Born 2/27/1833 in Wilkes County,NC. Enrolled 7/21/62 in Rutherford Co Captured along with most of the regiment 9/9/63 at Cumberland Gap Tn Held at Camp Douglass,Ill till 6/15/65 5/9' dark hair & complexion grey eyes. Captured along with brothers, G.W. and Larkin. Died 4/29/1891, probably in Tennessee.

Teamster...Son of Rev Cornelius & Nancy Brown Livingston. Born 11/10/1835 in Wilkes County,NC. Detailed as a teamster, muster roll shows him serving at Bristol and Greenville Tn during March & April 63 George apparently escaped capture at Cumberland Gap Enrolled 7/14/62 in Rutherford County NC. died 6/13/1914 in Granger Co.Tn. Became a well-known Doctor following the war.

Adam was a great great great uncle of mine. He was captured at the Cumberland in September 1863. Was taken to Camp Douglas in Chicago. Died there in January of 1864 and is buried with many other in the Confederate Mound.

Thomas Gaddy. Captured along with his brother Jeremiah Gaddy at Cumberland Gap Sept 9, 1863. He served in Company I 62nd NC Infantry; he was born on January 7, 1833. Thomas Resided in Haywood County and was by occupation a 'renter' prior to enlisting in Haywood County at age 29, July 12, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Sergeant prior to September 1, 1862. Reported present or accounted for through June 30, 1863. Captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, September 9, 1863. Sent to Louisville, Kentucky. Confined at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, September 26, 1863. Released at Camp Douglas on June 15, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. He had a fair complexion, with brown hair, blue eyes and was 5' ft 6. Joined in July 1862 at age 28. Captured at Cumberland Gap in Sep 1863 was able to survive the attrocities of Camp Douglas, IL and was released 18 May 1865. Married Harriett Hall, sister of my GGGgrandfather, Lawson A Hall.

Pvt.Cash signed in Transylvania, NC and sent to Cumberland Ridge after a few skirmishes. Several spectulations as to how a couple of entire companies were surrendered with almost no shots fired. Most of the men were marched to Maryland and the others were then marched on to Camp Douglas in Ill. where Pvt.Cash died a couple years later, 2 months before the last of the prisoners were to be released. Death cert. shows a type of blood poisoning due to dehydration. He is buried in the Confederate mound just outside of Chicago Ill.
