10th Ohio Infantry

Enlisted at outbreak of war along with his senior class at Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. He's on the original roster, but can't find him after that, nor does NARA list him. Looking for a service record. The original unit was called the Miami University Rifles. Later 10th Battalion Infantry, company B. Any information much welcome..

Patrick Twohig, my greatgrandfather was born in Clondrohid, County Cork, Ireland on May 19,1839. The Twohigs emigrated to America between 1848 and 1850, and probably entered via the Port of New Orleans. From there it was an easy trip to their final destination at Cincinnati. At the outbreak of the war, Patrick, and his brother Daniel joined the 10th Ohio, Cincinnati's Irish Regiment. Patrick enlisted for both the three month and three year's service, and served the complete terms. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati, married Mary Ring,and had six children. He worked as a laborer at a company called Lane and Bodley, which originally manufactured sawmill equipment, but which later expanded to all sorts of durable goods. Sometime in the late 1880s he left his family and went to live at the Ft. Leavenworth Kansas Military Home, and later at the Marion Indiana National Military Home in Marion, Indiana. He died there in 1917 and is buried at its National Cemetery. Hugh Coyle, a band member of the 10th Ohio is also buried there. I am the only Twohig family remaining in the Cincinnati area.

Daniel Twohig was my great grandfather's brother. Born in 1836 in Clondrohid, Co. Cork, he came to America circa 1848 with his family. His mother ran a boarding house at the corner of 6th & Row in downtown Cincinnati. Daniel and his brother Patrick enlisted with the 10th Ohio and served there but in different companies. Daniel was in Field & Staff as a Sergeant Major, and then as 1st. Lt. in Company E. After Daniel returned from the war, he married and had three childten. His first wife died. He remarried, and had two more childen. Al lof his children were girls, two of whom became Catholic Nuns (Sisters of Charity in Cincinnati). Daniel got a job with the Cincinnati Fire Dept, and rose to the rank of Captain, and was well known around the city. He died in 1914 and is buried in Ohd St Joseph's Cemetery in Price Hill. His photograph appears in the Book 'Echoes of Battle' by Baumgartner and Strayer.

Joseph Turner served with the 10th Ohio Inf. Regts from 24Jun61 to 17Jun64 as a clerk in adjutant''s office.

Pvt. William D. Lindley served with Co. H, 10th Reg., Ohio Cavalary. Was captured by Confederates on Aug. 31, 1864. His wife Martha Turks Lindley served with him, disguised as a man. She drove a canon wagon.
