This was a '100 day' volunteer regiment of the Ohio National Guard with just over 400 men of which 32 died from disease from their service. After serving guard duty at four forts guarding NW and NE Washington, DC during May 1864, they moved to White House Landing, Virginia on June 8, 1864. They served for a few days in the trenches at Bermuda Hundred and City Point on the James River. Immediately after the Battle of Petersburg, VA (June 15-18th, they were assigned to Ft. Pocohontas, Wilson's Landing, VA until August 29, 1864, when they returned to Washington, DC and then to Camp Chase, Ohio where they were discharged on September 13, 1864. The family that owns Wilson's landing by Ft. Pocohontas is a Civil war Historian who has documented the history of the war in that area in a paper on his website. This document and others can be found by a internet search with these key words in quotes '143rd Ohio infantry'. His paper includes interesting quotes from diary entries and letters from individuals in the 143rd and the other units stationed there. They heavily armed the fort and expected a major attack by the Confederates. But it never came. Among the nearby private properties from which these units 'requisitioned' food and suplies is the home of former President James Madison.
