John Edward Davis (Davies) first enlisted into the 27th Regiment Ohio Vol Inf on 1 August 1861. He was separated from the Army after receiving injury to his eyes during the Battle of Corinth. He later re-entered the Army and was assigned to the 195th Regiment, OVI and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant on March 17, 1865. Several months later Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox and John was mustered out as a captain on December 18, 1865 in Washington D.C.
