John enlisted in the 83rd PA, wounded and medically discharged. He again enlisted, in the 72nd PA, wounded and discharged. Was called up with the 34th PA Inf Regt of Militia as a SGT after the Emancipation Proclamation to quell the riots going on in almost every northern cities, and when the Confederates invaded MD and PA in Jun 1863. He was in Harrisburg with his unit during Gettysburg. After his release from the 34th he joined the Union Navy, serving aboard the USS Suwanee, and again discharged medically from the Receiving Ship USS Vermont in 1867, before the Suwanee ran aground and sank offshore Washington State in the Pacific.

Chambers was my great-great grandfather.

George was the brother of my great-great grandfather, Chambers Sterrett Bates, also of Co. C.

Killed at Gaines' Mill. Thaddeus was the brother of my great-great grandfather, Chambers Sterrett Bates, Co. C.

Alfred Sherrod enlisted along with his cousin, Sylvester Sherrod, at Edinboro in 1861. He served until the expiration of service with the 83rd PVI in 1864 without any serious injuries and returned home to western Pennsylvania. His name is included on the 83rd PVI monument at Little Round Top, Gettysburg Battlefield.

Brother to Sylvester and cousin to Alfred Sherrod. Enlisted Aug 1862 at Edinboro and became a fifer in his regiment's drum corp. He was at Gettysburg, Laurel Hill and the Wilderness battles before being killed at Petersburg in June 1864. Lewis Sherrod's name is included on the 83rd PVI monument at Little Round Top, Gettysburg Battlefield.

Enlisted 1861 at Edinboro. Fought at Battle of Hanover Courthouse and Gaines' Mill. Wounded and captured at Gaines' Mill but died of wounds in August 1862. Sylvester sent home photographs of himself in the 83rd's Zouave-type uniform. Am hoping a collector will notify me if surname 'SHERROD' appears on any Civil War soldier's photographs.

Warren Stuyverson enlisted in Edinboro, Pennsylvania (Green Township, Erie County) on August 26th of 1861. He served as a Private in Company D of the 83rd Pennsylvania Regiment of Volunteers in the Infantry. He was wounded in action in 1863 and was discharged on a Surgeons Certificate on February 3rd of 1863.

Affidavits by Curtis Baxter for a pension state that he served 3 months in 1861 in the Penn State Militia, from May 1861 in Co E 83rd Pa Mil. Infantry, under Capt Austin and Col John W. McLane.

Enlisted as a Corporal on 26 August 1861. Enlisted in Company E, 83rd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 26 Aug 1861. Promoted to Full Corporal on 24 Dec 1863. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 29 May 1865. Mustered Out Company E, 83rd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 28 Jun 1865 at Washington, DC.

Enlisted August 30, 1862 Killed at Peeble's Farm, Va., September 30, 1864

Enlisted as a Private on 07 October 1862 Enlisted in Company E, 82nd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 07 October 1862. He was wounded on June 1, 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA He was shot in the lower back/hip area. He was disabled as a result of the injury Mustered out Company E, 82nd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 13 July 1865 in Hall's Hill, VA

William was killed 6/5/1864 by a sniper after the war when he was traveling through Virginia by Horseback. Buried at Townville,Pa. Enlisted 8/19/1861. Was wounded Gettysburg. William was older brother of Louis Gleason who was my GG-Grandfather. Louis married Lucretia Pond.

Was wounded at the battle of Laural Hill, Virginia while in the act of saving the regt. colors. Brother of Eseck Jones and William Jones of the 83rd Illinois.

Henry was my third great uncle. He enlisted into Co. G. on February 28, 1865. Note: older brothers Andrew and John F., served in the 63rd and 139th Pa. regiments, respectively.

James Henry Hunter, was one of the first 20 men to inlist in company G 83rd Pa in 1861, he was shot in the left shoulder at the second battle of bullrun, he served the rest of his inlistment in company A of the 18th Veteran Reserve Corps, company G was also known as the Tionesta Rangers

Lorin Godfrey was killed on 30 August 1862 in 2nd Bull Run, Virginia.
