John Gardner was my great-great-great grandfather who suffered mortal wounds at Fredericksburg.

Birth: 1824 Union County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Sep. 22, 1863 Beaver Springs Snyder County Pennsylvania, USA By trade, a shoemaker, like many of the Getz family. David was a member of Co. F, 131st Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. in the 2nd Bde, 3rd Div, V Corps, Army of the Potomac. The V Corps was present at, but not engaged, during the Battle of Antietam. At the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, the V Corps was commanded by BG Daniel Butterfield, the 3rd Division by BG Andrew A. Humphreys and the 2nd Brigade by Col. Peter H. Allabach. The V Corps, 3rd Division (Humphreys) assaulted Marye's Heights in mid-afternoon. The apex of the assault reached within 50 yards of the stone wall before being cut down. According to his Company's Muster Roll, David was wounded in this attack on 13 Dec 1862 and was moved to Finley U.S. General Hospital in Washington, DC (located in the blocks immediately south of present-day Howard University Hospital). From there, family tradition has it that two of his brothers, Isaac and Henry Getz (Henry was in the same Company and Regiment as David) took him home. He died about nine months later on 22 Sep 1863. Daniel's wife, Mary, applied for a widow's pension on 22 Oct 1863.

He was mustered in on 12 Aug 1862 as a member of Co. F, 131st Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. in the 2nd Bde, 3rd Div, V Corps, Army of the Potomac. The V Corps was present at, but not engaged, during the Battle of Antietam. At the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, the V Corps was commanded by BG Daniel Butterfield, the 3rd Division by BG Andrew A. Humphreys and the 2nd Brigade by Col. Peter H. Allabach. As part of the V Corps, the 131st Pennsylvania also participated in the infamous 'Mud March' and in the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA. Henry Mustered out with Company F on May 23, 1863. Henry reenlisted on 21 Sep 1864 as Private in Co. H, 199th Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. and served until June 28, 1865. Henry was a member of the Major William H. Byers Post, No. 384 (reorganized as Post No. 612), Department of Pennsylvania, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.)

Enlisted as a Corporal on 12 August 1862. Mustered out with company on 23 May 1863 at Harrisburg, PA.

Enlisted as a Private on 12 August 1862 at the age of 18. Mustered out on 23 May 1863 at Harrisburg, PA.
