My gg uncle. Buried at Bethelem Cemetary. Blount county. He died from his injuries on the Sultana.

First Cousin to my 3x Great Grandfather John McCampbell Nelson 10th/14th TX Cav. D, 3rd Tenn Cav, Comm sergeant UNION 1 Dec 62 - 27 Apr 1865 Captured Sulphur Branch Trestle, AL 25 Sep 64 Killed in explosion steamer Sultana at Memphis His brother William E Mansfield was the 1SG of D Co, 3rd TN Cav, and survived the Sultana disaster. Thomas's older brother Robert F Mansfield may have been in the 22nd TN Infantry, CSA.

Captured at Sulphur Branch Trestle, AL. Exchanged 25 Sep 64, mustered outJun 65 1865-04-27 Survived explosion on steamer "Sultana". His brother SGT Thomas Monroe Mansfield was also in D Co, 3rd TN Cav, USA, and was killed in the explosion on the Sultana. His older brother Robert F Mansfield was potentially in the 22nd TN Infantry, CSA.

Died in the Explosion of the Sultana Steamship, April 27, 1865. Per my research, died on the Mississippi river, his body was not recovered.

(2). John G Smith's date of death is listed on Widows Veterans census of 1890; 1st Civ Dist; Soddy- Daisy; Hamilton Co, TN Application Number 507141; Certificate Number 335246. Death is listed as Mar 25, 1891.

Born 1836 Hancock County, Tn./Died Apr 1865 Sinking of USS Sultana. Enlisted Mar. 1864, Knoxville, Tn. Captured alone with 900 others Sept, 1864 Sulphur Branch Trestle, Al. Prisoner of War Camp Cahaba, Al. Sept 1864 (7 Months in Prison). Released April 1864 and sent to Vicksburg, Miss for trip to Cairo, Ill. to Muster out. Boarded USS Sultana with 2400 other passengers. Sultana exploded above Memphis killing 1700 Union Soldiers. Boat overloaded due to greed, getting $5 per passenger. Wilson's widow Susanette and two kids received a Pension. Wilson two brothers Ezekiel served with the 43rd Tennessee Inf CSA, and John 1st Tennessee Art. Union died in Libby Prison.

My 3rd great grandfather

Enisted 03-12-1864; Served until being discharged on 08-03-1865. His brother John, served in the 62nd North Carolina, C.S.A.. A true story of 'Brother Against Brother.'

His twin brother served in the 3rd Confederate Cavalry

A Rebel deserter from the 52nd Georgia. He enlisted 3/13/1864 in Knoxville, Tn. On June 17th, he was mustered into Company L, 3rd TN Union Cavalry, by their Captain, Oliver P. McCammon. There are two conflicting reports as to the fate of young T.C. Land of Towns, Georgia. His Union Army record says he died on Aug.12, 1864, 'of measles at Brigade Hospital, Decatur, Alabama'. The Report of the Adjutant General State of Tennessee says, He was one among almost 500 men of the 3rd TN Cavalry captured by Forrest at Sulfur Branch Trestle, AL. on Sept.24, 1864 and later exchanged. The Adjutant General's report also has him being killed in the explosion of the Steamer 'Sultana', Memphis, TN. April 27, 1865. On Oct.12, 1869, his mother filed for a Federal Pension based on his service.
