4th Tennessee Cavalry

H. L. W. Roulston enlisted under the name of L.W. Roulston in the Union Army in 1862 and participated in many campaigns in East Tennessee, many times to defend his own property. His half brother, 'Jughead' Roulston, also served in the same outfit as a Lieutenant.

Great-great-grandfather. Shot returning to his Company on Sept. 4,1864. According to Company records they were in the Decatur/Moulton/Pond Springs areas of Alabama in pursuit of Wheeler. Died in hospital in Decatur, Alabama, with wife Elizabeth Ann at his side. Buried in the Federal Cemetery in Corinth, Mississippi No. 204.

Pleasant Hurst -- Private, 4th Tennessee Cavalry, Company A Born: Jan. 1830, Sevier County, Tennessee Died: 7 Mar 1865, Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee Enlisted on 14 Aug 1863 Service record marked with numerous periods of "present" and "absent" remarks. Deserted for a time, returned, and was confined to military prison as punishment. Buried: Nashville National Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. (Section G, site 8565)

Residence, Washington County,TN. 23 years old. Enlisted on 11/15/1862 as a Comm Sergeant. On 2/9/1863 he mustered into 'B' Co. TN 4th Cavalry He was Mustered Out on 7/12/1865. Adam.had 4 brothers-in-law who were Confederate Soldiers There was a Confederate Adam Shipley in the 63rd TN.

Alexander Wyrick went North from Sullivan County, Tennessee and joined the Union Army @ Mt. Pleasant, Ky in November 1862. He served in Co. B, 4th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry in Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. He served as Co. B Blacksmith. Honorable Discharge @ Nashville, Tn July 1865.

James E. Horner went North with his father and joined the Union Army in Kentucky shortly following the South's call for Drafting. He died in the Union Army Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on October 9, 1864 from chronic dysentery. Following the war his body was returned to Jefferson County and buried in the Economy Cemetery in present day Hamblen County, Tn

Thomas A. Horner enlisted in the Union Army in Kentucky with his oldest son James in 1862 shortly following the South's instituting the Draft. He and James joined the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, Co. C. Thomas A. Horner died in the Union Army Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on June 13, 1865, one month before his comapny was mustered out of service. He died in the same hospital and from the same cause, chronic Dysentery, as did his son James the previous October.

U.S. Private James Alfred Miller was my GG Grandfather, William LaFayette 'Fate' Miller's older brother. He was 5'10' with blue eyes, Dark Hair, and Fair Complexion. He was a farmer and from Harrison/Dallas Bay (North of Chattanooga, TN), Hamilton County, Tennessee. He Volunteered and Enlisted at the age of 19 in the Union Army on 18 Apr 1863 and served in Company A,D,G, and finally F of 4th Tennessee Cavalry and was taken prisoner at the Chattahoochee River at Liberty Hill, GA 7/31/1864 and held in captivity at Andersonville Prison and exchanged 04/01/1865 at Vicksburg, MI and discharged on 12 July 1865 having served 2 years, 2 months, and 24 days. He died in Feb 1880 from pneumonia. The family lore said he never fully recovered physically from his imprisonment at Andersonville, GA Prison. (record I25610)

Died of measles in Nashville 30 March 1864. Buried there with his brother Noah Burdett. Noah R. Burdett was son of George Washington Burdett and Eda Hockett. Born about 1846 in Bledsoe County, TN. Joined Company K with his brother Henry C. Burdett. Died of measles in Nashville 3 April 1864. Buried there with his brother Henry Burdett. Noah and Henry had a brother Samuel M. Burdett that served in Company M, 10th Tennessee Cavalry (USA) as well as a brother Thomas Burdett that served in the Confederate forces. All are the brothers to the great great grandmother of the submitter's wife.

Adam L. Whitehead is my Gr-grandfather. I am just beginning to research his military history, and have his pension file, which lists conflicting dates & places of death for him: Gallipolis, OH, 1862, and Bull''s Gap, TN, 1864; died of typhoid on both entries. I hope his service record, which I have yet to acquire will shed some light on his death.

Wesley Wyrick followed his older brother Alexander North from Sullivan County, Tennessee and joined Co. K, 4th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry @ Mt. Pleasant, Kentucky in 1864. He was Co. K 'Blacksmith'. He survived the war.
