5th Tennessee Cavalry

The brother of my great-great grandfather. Born c. 1833 near Caney Spring in Marshall Co., TN. A carpenter by trade. Enlisted as a private 9 Sept. 1862, discharged as a captain and was in commnad of the regiment when it was disbanded 14 August 1865. Participated in numerous battles and campaigns including actions against CSA units his brother and cousins served in. Lived in White Co., TN after war. Died 10 Jan. 1868. GAR post in Rover, Bedford County, TN was named after him.

William C. Clinton served from the organization through the war as a ferrier with Company B, 5th (1st Middle) Tennessee Cavalry, USA.

Susan Wolfe was born June 18,1840 in Hancock County, Tennessee, died in Luther, Hancock County, Tennessee. Benjamin enlisted in the Civil War on December 17,1862 in Sneedville, Hancock County,Tennessee. Company G, 5th {McKenzies} Tennessee Cavalry.

Brother of John R Gan - 1890 Civil War Veterans Census - Gann, Christopher - Macon Co -106-2 (1) Pvt. I Co. 5th Tn Cav. 1862 to 1865. Currently living in Lafayette P.O. Thrown from a horse and bruised. His discharge is at Washington.

Daniel Gan married Martha Ann Gan on 14 July 1854 in Cannon CO, Tennessee - 1890 Civil War Veterans Census, Tn, pg 111 - Gan, Daniel Macon Co -106-3(2) - PVT I Co. 5th Tn Cav; 11-1-62 to 7-65 Hillsdale PO - Enlargement of testicles. Wounded in right thigh, pensioner, discharge is at Washington. 28 Sept 1865 - Commissioned Officers' Certificate of Disability dated September 25, 1865 signed by ... Blackburn. This document reads: 'Liberty Tenn Sept 2Sth, 1865. Daniel Gan a Private of Captain James L. Exums Company I of the 5th Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry was enlisted by Lieut. Brien of the 5th Regiment of Tenn Cavalry at Nashville Tenn on the 29th day of November 1862, to serve Three Years, he was born in Cannon County in the State of Tennessee is 28 years of age, five feet, eight inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted farmer., during the last two months prior to said soldier's discharge, he was unfit for duty sixty days, by reason of a gunshot wound by the enemy in the right thigh which was received while in the service of the United States, and in the line of this duty at Short Mountain in action in the State of Tennessee, on or about the First day of August 1865.'

My Great Great Grandfather on my Mothers, Mothers Side - 1st Cousin of Daniel Gann. Brother of Daniel Gan's wife, Martha Ann Gan. Enlisted in Co I, 5th Tennessee Cavarly on 13 May 1863 and was Discharged 14 Aug 1865. - 1890 Civil War Veterans Census - Gann, John R., DeKalb Co-33-3. Francis widow of;, Pvt I Co. 5th Tn Cav: 5-13-63 to 8-14-65; Halesvile PO; injury to left hip by horse in service.

According to Enoch's Union Service Records, he volunteered for military service in Nashville, Tennessee on 22 July, 1862. He served as a corporal with Company A, Middle Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. He then was asked to be released on 5 August, 1863 and mustered in as a commissioned officer (2nd Lt.) with Company I of the 5th Tennessee Cavalry, by order of the governor of Tennessee. He was the Acting Regimental Adjutant until his election as Putnam County Court Clerk in 1864. Enoch tendered his resignation from the U.S. Cavalry and it was accepted so he could begin his duties as a civil servant.

Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Bledsoe County, Tennessee (fieldstone grave).
