6th Tennessee Cavalry

Having finished his medical education Pleasant joined as a surgeon to Col. Hurst 6th Calvary in 1864 and served six months until April 17, 1865 when he muster out. He was born in Weakley County, Tennessee March 4, 1839 to Andrew Jackson and Frances (Winstead) Cashion and married Desda Stowe Febuary 1, 1866. It is reported he died in California. He appeared in one of the articles of Goodspeed. His brother John Franklin served in the 31st Infantry Confederate and also became a physican after the war.

Fielding was born 1810 in Claiborne County in (east) TN. He was the son of Elijah and Margaret Breeding Hurst. He married Melocky Huddleston March 4th 1830. Around 1833 they moved to McNairy County TN. He became a surveyor, lawyer, merchant, farmer . He joined the Masonic lodge at Purdy, TN. He became one of the largest land and slave owners in the area. When war came to southern middle Tennessee Fielding remained loyal to the union.

This regiment is also known as the 1st West Tennessee Cavalry Mack J. LeamingCompany adjutant. Official Records: Film No. M392 roll 9. Born in LaPorte Co. IN, son of Daniel Mackintosh Leaming and Mary Tucker. His brothers Edward H. Leaming, Rush Green Leaming, Silas T. Leaming, and William J. Leaming also served in Union regiments.

William Jasper Scroggins was born 15 Apr 1837 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, the son of Smith Scroggins and Tabitha George. William Scroggins was living in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, with his extended family when the Civil War began. Two of his bothers, Smith and Abner, enlisted in the Confederate Army but William favored the Union cause. William returned to Bethel, McNairy County, Tennessee and enlisted in the Federal Army. He enlisted in Company C, 1st West Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. This unit was later redesignated as Company C, 6th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Williiam served as a teamster and lost one of his arms during the War. He was mustered out of the Federal Army on July 26, 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee. Family tradition tells us that due to hard feelings from the Civil War and William Jasper's Service in the Yankee Army, the entire Scroggins clan would not associate or talk to William Jasper's family. His brother Smith Scroggins died as a result of wounds he received during the war and there was a lot of animosity against the Federal troops. Supposedly around the mid 1870's the family had a reunion on banks of the Mississippi River near Jacinto, Tishomingo County, Mississippi and the whole family made up and put away hard feelings.

Duncan B Vandyke Joined for duty and enrolled as a private in Captain Kemp's Company C, 6th Tennessee Calvary at Bethel, Tennessee on September 25, 1862. He enrolled for a period of three years. He was mustered in at Bolivar, TN on November 13, 1862. He was twenty four years old. He was on detached service to the Tennessee River by special order #72 on December 15, 1862 until January 1863. Muster rolls of May and June, 1863 show that he was on absent on parole. March and April of 1864, he was on detached service at Helena Arkansas by special order of Major General Hurlbut. He was promoted to 8th Corporal August 8, 1864. He was reduced back to Private on January 18, 1865 "on his own accord" Possible reason is stated on his muster roll: "Lost by neglect, one copper bugle & cord with extra mouth piece." This also appears on the March and April, 1865 muster roll: "Lost one copper bugle and cord and extra mouth piece. Money value: $3.50" May and June of 1865, records state that he "Lost by neglect, one sword, scabbard, bayonet and ????, money value - $4.30" He was mustered out at Pulaski, Tennessee, on July 26th, 1865. He died about 1875. He was said to be 5 feet 6 inches tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was born in Giles County, Tennessee and his regular occupation was a farmer. Mar 1865 (Co D) absent sick in hospital, Nashville since February 1865. Apr 1865 (Co C) on duty guard permanent. Son of Isaac W Vandyke (1808 – 1868) and Eliza Bell Brown (1808 – 1891) Married Martha J. Willis, Oct 19, 1865 Hardin County, TN ∼Duncan B Vandyke enlisted in Company F of the 55th Tennessee Infantry Regiment in Henderson County which was formally organized at Trenton Tennessee and deployed to Island Number Ten. They were sent to Columbus Kentucky and Duncan became sick and on November 13 1861 he was furloughed home and never returned. Duncan B Vandyke later appears in Colonel Fielding Hurst's 6th Tennessee U.S. Cavalry Regiment in 1862 and remained in that unit throughout the war. Duncan and his wife Martha Willis were married in Hardin County Oct 19 1865 and appear in Lexington TN on the 1870 Census in District 13, Henderson County. They had children at that time, James Thomas 4 and Mary 2. A Lucy Willis is also living in the household. They had a third child Columbus Vandyke.

CAPT Levi Hurst served as Commanding Officer of Co. D. 6th TN Cav (USA) from it's formation in September 1862 through the summer of 1864. Risden D. Deford was born in Alleghany City, Pennsylvania on September 28th 1839. He moved to Florence and Lauderdale Co. Alabama and was on the 1860 census there. When war came to Alabama Risden crossed the line into Hardin and McNairy county TN. December the 20th 1862 he joined the 1st West Tennessee Cavalry as 1st lieutenant. Captain Joseph G. Berry was discharged from the military Risden was promoted to succeed him October 7,1864. He is mentioned several time in the Bugger Saga a book written by Wade Pruitt about guerilla warfare in Lauderdale co, Al. and Wayne and Lawrence co, TN. He suffered at least one major wound during the war. After the war was over he returned to Hardin County TN. where he lived the rest of his life as a business man and served for two years on the state legislature representing Hardin county. Risden D. Deford departed this world November 12, 1911 at Savannah, Tn. and was laid to rest in the City Cemetery in Savannah.

Issac C. Wainscott was my Great-Great Grandfather and was born and raised in Sharon, Tn. He was wounded and lost his left arm at the elbow so he was discharged in 1864.

James F Hampton enlisted at North Gibson County, Tennessee on August 11,1862 as a private in Company M of the 6th Tennessee cavalry. He was honorably discharged at Pulaski, Tennessee on July 1,1865. He was a teamster. He was 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighed 190 lbs. He was born Feb 8, 1843 at Carroll County Tennessee and died July 6,1907 at Bradford, Gibson County Tennessee. He married Mary Silvia Mount on Jan 31, 1867 at Gibson County, Tennessee
