22nd Tennessee Cavalry

John was born in 1827 in Macon Co. Tenn. He has 12 cards in his archival file. He enlisted in Co a 2nd Regt Tenn. Cavalry on 23 May 1862 at its formation at Nashville. Enlisted by Col. J G Pickett. for 12 months. NOTE there are 3 Confederate Regiments known as the 2nd. There is no known written history for the 22nd that I am aware of, However, I have found much information on the CMR cards in John's file. in two places [ The 21st [aka] as the 16th and Wilsons and the 22nd also known as the 2nd and Barteau's Regiment Tenn. Cav. were consolidated about March 1865 apparently in accordance with S.O. No 28 Hdqrs Cavalry District of Miss and East La. dated Feb 13,1865 and formed the 21st and 22nd Regiment Tenn. Cav. [Consolidated], which was paroled at Gainsville, Ala in May of 1865. 2. The history of this regiment is even more convoluted and confusing as the following units were incorporated in its ranks to bring it up to regimental strength. A & B Companies of 1st McNair's Battalion Ten Cav. & 7th [Bennett's] Battalion Teen Cav. In June 1863, Captain A. J Guttery's Co A 13th Battalion Alabama Partisan Rangers were transferred to this command and two Mississippi Companies were added to bring it to regimental strength. The Mississippi companies did not show up and the Alabama company was transferred to the 56th Regt. Partisan Rangers. [[Confused yet]]. About May 1864 three unattached Tenn. companies were assigned to the command and became 2nd Co. H Co I & K. Thus, the command formed was designated the 22ndRegt Tenn. Cav. but was known in the field as 2nd Regt. Tenn. Cav. PS: It should be noted that over the years I have found several members marked as deserted. I believe this is in error as the chaotic conditions at the time let to the loss of paperwork and the sheer confusion to the time led to later clerical errors as I have found men back in their unit after being declared deserted. John was related to me by marriage to Louisa Eliza Jane Huddleston. John died in 1882 and she died in 1936. May God rest their souls.

He is 22 years old and enroled at Camp Trenton, Tenn. on 10 August, 1861 for 12 months in [Freeman's Regiment]. It is 81 miles to rendezvous.He was severely wounded at the battle of Corinth and medically discharged at Tupelo, Miss. 4 July 1862. He was paid $66.59 cents. It is 120 miles form his location in Tupelo to his home in Trenton. At the time of discharge he is in Co. H. Capt. B.F. Brinkley's Co. of the 12th Reg't., Tenn Vol's.

Great Great Grandfather C.M. Vandiver joined up with General N.B. Forrest Army the 22nd Tenn. Cav. (Nixon's) Regiment , Company Captain C.H. Gilbert. Most of his account was in a Provost Guard unit when he joined, but still in Cav. Entered January 1864, at 16 years old fought last year of the war and was listed in the surrender , of General Forrest Army.1865 Survived the war and returned home, married MS. Jane Winters, later in 1874. moved to Texas, Coryell Co. died in 1937 age 90

Captain John A. Brinkley was born in S.C . He lived in Sumner County Tenn. He served in the 22nd ( or second) Tenn. Cav. under Colonel Clark Barteau . He met his wife Mary Mc Millan in Tupelo Ms duringthe war. He married her right after the war. After her death he remarried and moved to Amite , La. and is buried here in the McMichael Cemetary.

John Aspher Nichols was my 2nd great grandfather. He was born 19 May 1841 and died 21 Dec 1918. He enlisted in the 22nd Tennessee Cavalry also known as Capt. Sam Woodruff's Tennessee Volunteers at Danville, Benton County, Tennessee. They shortly became Company F, Claiborne's Regiment of Cavalry as a part of the 1st Confederate Cavalry. John Nichols was shot below the knee and thrown from his horse causing an inguinal hernia on April 6, 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh. He was discharged and did not return to the war.

John was born in Difficult, Smith Co. Tenn. 21 Feb 1843. The 1860 census finds him in that county age 17. The Post Office is at Dixon Springs. He has 20 cards in his archival file. There are 2 dates of enlistment 15 Nov 1861 and 14 Jan 1862. NOTE: see the data entered for John Thomas Vaughn to view explanation for the convoluted history of this unit. There is no official written history. The 22nd [Col. Clark Barteau's] is a consolidated regiment and struggled to maintain enough men to keep its regimental designation. John rode with Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest in the Tenn. campaign and was captured at Carthage, Tenn. after being shot in the left foot. He was imprisoned at Louisville, Ky and sent on to Camp Chase. He was released after swallowing the yellow dog. His description: fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, and is 5ft 10 inches tall. He died in the Confederate Home 5 Sept. 1919. He and his wife Minerva J Payne who died 25 Jun 1918 are buried at Bagdad Cem, Leander, Williamson Co. Texas.

James was born in Stoneville, Mayo Twp. Rockingham County NC. He has 3 cards in his archival file. The 1860 census finds him at 22 in this county. A few of his family members were living in Obion County, Tennessee. He moved there with his new wife Caroline Matilda Sims. He enlisted at Newbury, Tenn. 1 Dec 1863 in Co. I. 22nd Tenn. Cavalry on the 26 of Jan. 1864 the 22nd [consolidated] came under the command of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest in Col. T.H. Bell's Brigade. His horse a Bay Mare was valued at $400. this CMR states he is on detached service. Engagements: Brice's Crossroads, Fort Pillow, Harrisburg, Capture of Athens, and Hoods invasion of Central Tennessee. He attended several Regimental reunions. He filed for pension from Obion County Tennessee. He died 16 April 1816 in East Prairie, Mississippi County, Missouri. Buried at Oak Grove Cem. Charleston Mississippi County, Missouri. He was the husband of my distant cousin Carolina Matilda Sims.
