14th Tennessee Cavalry

Born in 1838 in Tennessee, Sal as he was called was the son of Samuel Benton and Axie Lee (Elkins) Harris. He was born at Cub Creek half way between Bolivar and Middleton. He served in the Middleton tigers until he could procure a horse then he joined the 14th and served under General Forrest command. A newspaper article written by his son in the 1930 was full of high adventure. Sal married twice, before the War to Frances W. Ray and after her death he married her younger sister Louisa V. Ray. I have no information on his death.

Green joined his unit in Yankee controlled West Tennessee in 1863. Several hundred young men rode South to connect with the Confederacy and several were captured. Green made it through and only one record exists showing that he had not yet received his pay. Casualty records with cavalry were not as good as infantry. He lost his life in the war, but not sure when. He lost two brothers in the war and his father passed away the fall after Green joined up. It was a bitter harvest for the prosperous tobacco farming family who thought they were fighting the Second American Revolution. Deo Vindice

James mustered in 1 July, 1863 at Denmark, by J.J. Neely for three years.Also known as the 14th Regiment was consolidated with the 15th and 21st [Carter's] CMR for 8 July to May 12 states that he is a POW. James's brother Milton Jefferson Pankey is a 4th Sergt, in this unit.

Ed Jacobs born November 24, 1841 in Hardeman County, Tennessee,the son of William R and Sarah Jacobs.His service in this unit was interestingly depicted by an article in the Bolivar Bulletin in the early 1900's. He fought in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth and many other and was wounded at Yazoo City, Mississippi in 1864. He also served in the Middleton Tigers (Infantry - Tennessee) before joining Forrest Cavalry. He died August 18, 1918 in Hardeman County, Tennessee.

ROBERT FRANKLIN (R.F.) STRIBLING WAS MY MATERNAL 3rd GREAT GRANDFATHER. HE WAS MARRIED TO EUPHRASIA EVELINE ANDERSON STRIBLING. HIS PARENTS WERE WILLIAM AND NICIE BLACK STRIBLING. HE WAS BORN IN S.C. HE NEVER COMPLETELY RECOVERED FROM A LUNG INFECTION CAUGHT IN THE WAR. HE TRAVELED TO FLORIDA TO TRY TO CURE IT, BUT FAILED. I HAVE HIS LETTERS TO HIS WIFE TELLING ABOUT WHERE HE WAS STAYING AND HIS CONDITION AT THE TIME. HE DIED BEFORE 1870. THEY HAD 3 DAUGHTERS: ALLIENE, LELIA (MY MATERNAL GREAT GRANDMOTHER ), AND ANNIE. THEY LIVED IN MADISON COUNTY, TN., AND MCNAIRY CO, TN.

John born June 9, 1841 in Hardeman County, Tennessee first served in Smith's Artillery of Mississippi but later enlisted in the 14th with his cousins, Sal Harris and Ed Jacobs. He married C. E. Harris in 1866 and all his children were born of this union. John died Dec 19, 1928 in Texas I believe. My mother remembers as a very small girl seeing 'Great Uncle John' ride in the Decoration Day Parade in McKinney, Texas wearing his uniform.

Milton Jefferson Pankey enlisted 1 Feb. 1864,in the 14th [ Neely's]Tenn. Cav. in Hardeman Co. Tenn. by Capt. W. J. Hall for the war. He also appears on the roll of Nixon's Regiment of Tenn. Vol's. that was surrendered at Citronella, Ala. and Paroled at Gainsville, Ala. May 11 1865.

David Linticomb Perkins was born in Fayette County Tenn. and joined the 14th Neely's Cav. Co H. Later he removed to Jonesboro, Craighead Co., Ark., where he died in 1922. He was the son of William Henry and Sarah Wrightsell/Reitzel Perkins.
