5th Tennessee Infantry

Enlisted: Feb. 28, 1862 in Barbourville, KY Fought in Battle of Resaca, 1864 Reported AWOL from May 22-Sept. 8, 1864 (probably to help bring in the family's harvest) Fought in Battle of Franklin Mustered out: Mar. 28, 1865

My great grandfather's brother: enlisted Barbourville KY in 1862 at the age of 16. Survived all action of the 5th, mustered out in Nashville.

Also served in Co. I, 5th TN Infantry, USA, and Co. A, 17th Battalion, TN Cavalry, CSA.

Served November 1864 - July 1865 with rank of Corporal. Also served in Co. H, 59th TN Mounted Infantry, CSA.

Served in Companies, D, I, and K. Pelfrey entered the service as a Private on November 1, 1862, and was mustered in on November 27th of that same year. He attained the rank of Sergeant during his length of Service. Thomas was promoted to Sergeant on May 18th, 1863. Pelfrey served with the unit at Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville. He also participated in Sherman's campaign of the Carolinas. Thomas Pelfrey passed away on April 14, 1912, and was buried in Smyrna Cemetery. He has the second oldest grave (marked) in the cemetery. While in the service, Thomas Pelfrey was listed as 26 years old, 6 ft. 2 1/2 in., dark complexion, yellow eyes, and black hair.

Robert Ozias 'Icey' Jordan was born Jan. 1824 in Habersham Co., GA. He died 13 Sept 1907 Graysville, Rhea Co., TN. Pvt. Ozias Jordan enlisted in Co., 'F' 5th TN Inf USA. He contracted smallpox while he was in the War

Pvt. Francis M. Morgan was born 1836 Rhea Co., TN. He enlisted in the 5th TN Inf Co 'F' USA. He was killed in action 05 Oct 1863 in Chattanooga, TN. He was only 27 years old when he died.

'F' 5th TN Inf USA (AKA) 5th East Tennessee Infantry. Citations & Decorations: John received the 'GRAND ARMY BADGE' for the capture of a Confederate cannon. Disability Incurred: John's eyes were injured while he was in the Civil War, when he returned home from the War, he was given the name 'Sleepy John'. He also had Rhumatism. Charles had migrated from Botetourt County Virginia to Rhea County Tennessee in the 1830''s. He died on March 2, 1863 near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He had four sons who also were in the war, John, William, Jacob and Charles.

My GG Grandfather, Cpl. Willam Seward Raulston was wounded in the Right Shoulder in the battle of Resaca, GA on 05/14/1864 with Sherman's march through GA (promoted to Cpl on 06/20/1864). He continued on to Savannah and back and was discharged at the end of the war in Nashville, TN.

Great-great grandfather: enlisted with Southern forces in 1862, went AWOL and joined the 5th in 1863. Injured at Battle of Resaca. Survived the war.

Pvt. William E. Cole, Union soldier, 5th mounted Infantry Company G. died May 25, 1865 at Gordon's Mill, Georgia. I have looked for his burial site for two and a half years.
