8th Tennessee Infantry

John was a Corporal in F. CO, 16th Regiment Calvary & 8th Tennessee Militia Confederate Infantry CSA. He was under Gen. Joe Wheeler and Gen. Savage. His pension number is #S7500 Davidson Co., TN. John's war experience was as follows: June of 1861 he drilled at Camp Trousdale TN near KY border near Gallatin, TN He was at Cheat Mt. in Western Virginia under Robert E. Lee. Then to south Carolina in Winter of 61-62. In April of 1862 he went to Corinth MS. In the summer of 62 into KY with Braxton Bragg. Then in Oct of 62 he was in the Battle of Perryville where he is wounded twice. Then he convalesces for 60 days which would put him back for the battle of Stone River(Murfreesboro) in late Dec. or early Jan of 1863. In Sept of 63 he was at the battle of Chickamauga in Northern Georgia. After Chickamauga he transfers to Dibrell's 8th Cavalry which is attached to Joseph Wheeler. He goes to Fort Sanders to fight in support of Gen. Longstreet. Then he supported Gen. Joseph Johnston on his retreat to Atlanta as Sherman forces them back. G. [Granville] B. Lester of Lincoln County was an assistant surgeon with the 8th Tennessee, command of Col. A. S. Fulton.

According to copies of James Meadows' Civil War documents that I downloaded from Footnote.com, James Meadows left Co. K and joined Co. G. He then left the 8th Infantry and joined the 25th Infantry. He fought at Chickamauga, GA with the 25th Infantry. James was my husband's 2nd great grandfather, and he seems to have been quite a...character. James was the son of Charles and Rachel (MNU) Meadows. Charles and Rachel settled in the Flynn's Lick area of Jackson County, Tennessee and that is where James Meadows was born about 1832. According to his death certificate, James died in Gainesboro, Jackson County, Tennessee Jan 12, 1916 of La-Gripp (Influenza). James was the great grandson of Rev'l War soldier, Isham Meador.

Thomas Elias Brents enlisted at the age of 15 May 1861 at Camp Trousdsale, Tennessee. Son of T.W. Brents early Tennessee doctor and well known preacher (founder of the Church of Christ). Fought at Cornith Ms. and sent home because of his age. He rejoined the 8th in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky and Murfreesboro as part of the Wright Brigade. Wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga, a bullet lodging in his chest, above the heart. His life was saved by a ferrotype (tintype) picture of a young woman who later became his wife. The bullet struck the picture and lost part of its force before entering his chest. He was sent to the hospital at Macon, Georgia. Following his recovery and his work at the hospital, he rejoined the unit in Rock Face Ga. then moved with General Hood for the Battle of Nashville now as the Maney's Brigade. Because the 8th lost most of their wagons in the retreat, he was instructed by his Captain to return home for supplies. On the return journey he walked on a stone pike covered with snow with nothing but rags on his feet. Stopping for the night at a house, he was give a pair of old shoes and found out about the Confederate surrender. Following his marriage to Orpha Prosser in January of 1865, he attended Macon Medical School, where he specialized in medicine and surgery and graduated in 1871. He was offered the chair of medicine and surgery but declined, preferring private practice in Lewisburg. He and Mrs. Brents had four children born in Lewisburg. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge at Petersburg, Tennessee in June of 1866. In 1870 Dr. Brents and family migrated to Texas and the Indian Territory, going first to Dexter in Northeast Texas. In 1887, he moved north to Marietta, in the Indian Territory, and later to Ada about 1900. He practiced medicine and surgery until 1909. At that time he was forced to give up surgery because of palsy. He continued office calls and consultations for several years thereafter. Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated drug stores in several towns. His final years were spent in Ada, Ok.

Company D 8th TN Regiment Jesse enlisted in 1861 in the Confederacy with Capt. Calvin E. Myers and served 4 years of the war.

James Steelman was born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1820. Son of James and Chloe Ashby Steelman. James joined the 8th Tennessee Inf. Co. D at Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., Tenn. This regiment participated in the Cheat Mtn. Campaign, Shiloh, Tenn., Corinth, Miss., Perryville, Ky.,and lastly at Stones River/Murfreesboro, Tenn. where James was killed in action on Dec. 31, 1862. Terrible casualty loss here for this regiment 306 casualties out of the 474 engaged. James left behind his wife Mary E. Newsom whom he had married at Lincoln County on August 2,1859.

William Wesley Elam served in the Civil War, along with his cousin Jesse Washington Carmack, in Co. E of the 8th Tennessee Infantry. He served from 1861 to 1865. NAME: Elam, W.W. James Thomas Tooley 1859-1950 is was my gg grandfather and the son of john Rickman Tooley.He died of a disease.

I had three relatives who fought with Tennessee Infantry units in the War of the Rebellion. Thanks for maintaining this website. I just happened on it looking for photos or battle flags of the various units my relatives were involved with during the war.

John Hopkins Leftwich was born in 1846 to Littleberry Leftwich and Pauline (Pruit) leftwich. He died in fighting around Pulaski, Tennessee.
