13th Tennessee Infantry

Robert was born in Mecklenburg District NC. He enlisted and served as Assistant Surgeon in the 13th Tenn Infantry Regiment for most of the war. Taken POW at Memphis and released 5 June 1865.

Thomas S. Neal, Cousin of Samuel M. Neel also Co. B, 13 Inf.,His father was Thomas G. Neel and his mother Ann Spratt. Thomas was the brother of Samuel J. Neel. Thomas S., his wife, and his father Thomas G. are all buried in Macon Cemetery. The family has extensive North Carolina roots with many members of the family in the South Carolina Militia and the Continental Line of both North and South Carolina.

Samuel M. Neel enlisted as a 19 year old from Macon. He was wounded at Murfreesboro and captured at Kennesaw Mountain. He subsequently was sent to Chicago and remained there in prison until the end of the war. After a brief career as a lawyer in the Macon area, he entered the Columbia Theological Seminary and became a Presbyterian Minister. He died at the age of 80 and is buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City Mo. His brother Thomas S. Neal also served in Co. B, 13th. infantry.

My Great Grandfather, Lt William Rodgers called the area between Moscow and La Grange, TN home. After being mustered into service, he road on railway from Grand Junction, TN north to the western border of MO for a breif engagement with the brunt of the Federal Forces in that area. They then took the railway east to Stones River to engage in that battle where he was promoted to Lt of the 13th TN Inf Co E CSA. Upon arrival in Knoxville, the unit combined with the 154th TN to create a formidable force to reckon with. Thus was proven in short time at the Battle of Chickamauga where they captured the colors and plenty of men of the 77th PA Inf. After reading the diary, one could only guess that the company was in retreat or persuit to arrive at a certain place in Mississi. He was captured in Lockharat MS on 10/05/1863 and shippid up north to Johnsons Island POW Depot in Lake Erie and was released on 06/12/1865. He never complained about being there as everyone seemed to be treated well. The prison camp has been restored nicely and is a great place to visit and learn. You may find all of his letters to and from home logged into the TN State Archives.

Benjamin enlisted at age 17 in Lieut. G.W. Churchwell's Co. 13th Regiment Tenn. Vol's. on 29 Dec. 1861. Mustered in at Columbus Ky. He was killed in Action at Shiloh on 6 April 1862.

De Aragon was the regiment's medical steward until the army was reorganised at Tupelo following the Battle of Shiloh, then was transferred to the 9th Texas Infantry. Immigrant from Cuba, Lived in Moscow, TN.

Confederate Service Records has H.C. Gwyn serving in G Company 13th Tennessee Infantry starting October 1, 1961. The Tennessee Soldiers Application for Pension has H.C. Gwyn serving until April 26, 1865 where he surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston at Greensboro, NC.

Confederate Service Records show S.J. Gwyn serving as a private in G Company 13th Tennessee Infantry from 15 Aug 1861 to 30 Jun 1864.

2nd Captain of Company I, Forked Deer Volunteers, raised at Mifflin. Henderson County (now Chester) Tenn. Severely wounded at Stones River, captured, exchanged, promoted to Major. Commanded the combined 13th/154th Tennessee during the seige of Atlanta. Buried Henderson City Cemetery, Henderson, Chester Co Tn. Crook Ave named for him. His home served as the first courthouse for Chester in 1882.
