Hugh G. GWYN, Adj, 1st Lt, 23rd TN (later Maj and Adj to Gen John H Morgan and Gen Basil Duke)was the younger brother of Union Bvt Maj Gen James GWYN.

KIA 1864. Francis M. Welch was born 1832 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Son of James Welch. Mustered in August 1861 with younger brother George W. Welch, and cousins George K. and John W. Welch, all serving in the same Company. KIA 1864 leaving behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.

George K. Welch was born 1843 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Son of John Lyles Welch. Mustered in August 1861 along with his brother John Wesley Welch, and cousins George W. Welch and Francis M. Welch, all of them serving in the same Company.

George W. Welch was born 1840 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Son of James Welch. Mustered in August 1861 with his older brother Francis Marion and cousins George K. and John W. Welch, all serving in the same Company. Fought in the Battles of Shiloh, Munfordville, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and was active in the Appomattox Courthouse Campaign under General Lee leading to the surrender to Grant on April 9, 1865. George's older brother, Francis Marion Welch, served in this same Company and was KIA in 1864.

John W. Welch was born 1829 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Son of John Lyles Welch. Mustered in August 1861 along with his brother George K. Welch, and cousins George W. Welch and Francis M. Welch, all of them serving in the same Company.

James was 25 years old when he enlisted at Camp Trousdale, Unionville Tennessee on 24 Aug. 1861. Enlisted in Capt W. C. Blanton's Co. 23rd Regiment Tenn Infantry [Scudder's Rifles]. Martins Regiment. He was killed on the afternoon of 6 April 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh. He left behind a wife and a three year old son. He was the Father in law of my 2nd cousin 2 x removed.

My paternal gggrandfather.Born in 1838 Bedford Co TN..he and a brother enlisted in Oct 1862 in Bedford Co TN. Had heard he had died during Civil War, but no word on when/where or how. Trying to find where he died and is buried..last known Jan-Feb 1863 absent sick with measles, then present Mar-Apr 1863. Did he die from measles? Where was this unit at that time? Cannot find anything else about him after that date.

Henry served in the 23rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Martin's). This corresponds with Watson family oral history as well. The 23rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in August, 1861. Organized with ten companies, it was consolidated into eight after the Battle of Shiloh. The men were recruited in the counties of Maury, Smith, Lawrence, DeKalb, Bedford, Rutherford, Marshall, Perry, Cannon, and Coffee. After being involved in the conflicts at Shiloh, Munfordville, and Perryville, it was assigned to B.R. Johnson's Brigade and in November, 1863, consolidated with the 17th Regiment. The regiment participated in the Battles of Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, moved to Knoxville, then was ordered to Virginia. Here it fought at Drewry's Bluff, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and was active in the Appomattox Campaign. It took 570 effectives to Shiloh and lost twenty-six percent of the 201 at Perryville, twenty-three percent of the 272 at Murfreesboro, and fifty-four percent of the 181 at Chickamauga. On April 9, 1865, there were 4 officers and 52 men at the surrender. The field officers were Colonels Richard H. Keeble, Mathias Martin, James F. Neill, and Horace Ready; Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cantrell; and Majors John G. Lowe and George H. Nixon.
