Isaac joined the 35 TN Infantry (CSA), 5th infantry, 1st Mountain Rifle Regiment at Camp Smartt on September 6, 1861. He was wounded in battle in Kentucky and died at his home in December 25, 1861. He left behind his year old son, William Scott and wife Elizabeth Lawrence Scott.

William joined the CSA Army of Tennessee on Sept 7th,1861 at Smartt Station in Warren County, Tennessee. He was wounded the last weeks of January 1862 and returned home and died 10 days later, died on Feb 8th,1862. He was wounded at the battle of Nashville or the battle of Donelson.He was 37 years old at the time of his death. Survived by his wife Cynthia and 10 children. He also had two brothers who fought for the 16th Tennessee CSA. Issac and Willis also of Warren County, Tennessee. William and their brothers were half Cherokee.(Sulalitihi Sixkiller)mother

Andrew Jackson Perry was from Irving College and enlisted with other family at Smartt station. He was sick shortly after joining the Confederate Army and so were other men in his company. He enlisted as a private and was listed sergeant when captured at Missionary Ridge. He said he was taken to Tunnel Hill then sent north to prison and later released and went to Georgia to 'rejoin the boys'

Was actually in Company 2D. Fought at Shiloh, wounded and Captured at Perryville.

Found marker while working Norris Cemetery, Yocana, Polk Co., Arkansas.

John Davis was from Warren County Tennessee. His Pension Number was S11473. His wife was Sarah Elizabeth Cantrell Davis. Her Pension Number was W5091.

My great great grandfather was Sgt, Benjamin H. Ferguson..3rd Co.F 35th Tennessee Infantry, Mountain Rifles. Records indicate that he was severely wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. Evidently while at Tunnel Hill he deserted on Jan.19, 1864. He was from Chattanooga and in later years was known as Capt. Benjamin H. Ferguson..a steamboat Captain who plied the Tennessee River. There is a photo of him and his riverboat, the 'OCOEE' on page 54 of the book 'BRADLEY COUNTY'.

This is my great grandfather. I've been trying to find more info on him but only have copies of few of his service records. Is there a full roster of soldiers serving in this unit anywhere?

other members of my family are James' brothers, David, Daniel and William. There are several cards on them spelled many ways, Bouldin, Bowlin, Bolin, Bowling. They are all the same people in this unit.

S.F. Edwards was captured at Blythe's Ferry skirmish and sent to Rock Island Arsenal POW camp where he died of smallpox.

Isaac LaFayette Rhea was my 3rd cousin (2x removed) and was born in McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee. He Enlisted for a year at the age of 18 and joined the CSA Army at Camp Smartt, McMinnville, TN on 6 Sep 1861 and was mustered in at Bowling Green, KY on 31 Oct 1861. This unit was originally the 1st Mountain Rifle Regiment or the 5th Tennessee Provisional Regiment Co. H. He was 5'7' had blue eyes and light hair. After his Enlistment period was completed, he went to stay with family in Tullahoma, Coffee County, TN. He swore the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America in Nashville, TN on 10 April 1865. He died in McMinnville, TN on 2 Apr 1919.

He was present, rolls dated September. 6, 1861-Oct. 4, 1861, and March-June, 1862. He was sick at the hospital, October. 28, 1861. Land is listed as 'deserted, September 8, 1862', on the roll dated Nov.-Dec., 1862. Company H (1st Company K), 35th Tenn. This company was raised in Sequatchie Co. By Capt. W.D. Stewart, on September 6, 1861.

Son of Thomas J. Land & Matilda Jane Carlton of Wilkes County, N.C. William Land was 22 when he enlisted. He was present, September. 6-Oct. 4, 1861, & sick at hospital, since October. 28, 1861. He was listed as 'absent on sick leave since December 15, 1861 by Dr. Sworn certificate', rolls dated Jan.-April, 1863. He was further listed as awol, roll dated July 17, 1863. Later, in order to leave Union captivity and protect his family he joined Co.E Union 6th Tenn.Mtd.Inf.

Francis was born either in 1838 or 1841 in Sequatchie Co. Tennessee. He enlisted at Camp Smart near Minnville, Tenn. 5 Sept 1861 in Capt. Albert C Hanner's Co. 5th Tenn Regt. Provisional Army, aka Co A Mountain Rifle Regt. Their rendezvous is 29 miles away at Bowling Green Ky. where they were mustered. As a 3rd Corporal he is listed on 15 April 1863 as being on detached duty. He has 13 cards in his archival file. Assigned to General Polk, Granbury and Palmer's Brigade. Fought at Shiloh, Shelton's Hill, Richmond, Perryville, Knoxville, Shelbyville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, The Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville, The Carolina Campaign. The roster of this unit contained the names of 2427 men. Francis was my 3rd cousin 4 x removed. He died 4 Aug 1888 and is buried at the Stone Cem. Sequatchie County. Tenn.

I found records on ancestry.com of Isaac Lockhart in the 35th Tennessee Infantry as a private.

Private John Mitchell of Capt. E. Wood's Co H 5th Tenn Rgt died on 22 April 1862 from the effects of wounds received at Shiloh on the 6th of April 1862. His death was at a field hospital near Corinth, Mississippi. He was a native of Warren County Tennessee.

There is a SCV grave marker at New Garden Cemetery with Nickolas Sandlin as being a member of Co. H 35th Tennessee Inf. CSA. I assume he was a private in Co. H.

Pearl was 22 at his enlistment. He was present, September. 6-Oct. 4, 1861, and sick at hospital since October. 20, 1861. He was present, March-June, 1862, before being listed as 'deserted, September 1, 1862'.

(age 25 at enlistment)- enlisted as 1st Lt. of Company K, September 6, 1861, at Camp Smartt, Warren County, Tenn., for 12 months. Date of appointment [as 1st Lt.], September 6, 1861. He was present, on muster rolls dated September 6, 1861-October 4, 1861, and March-April, 1862 (as 1st Lt.). On a muster roll marked July 17, 1863, this entry is noted: 'Left out at reorganization of regt., May 8, 1862.'

Major G.S. Deakins was listed as commanding the 35th & 48th Tennessee regiments, Polk's Brigade, January 20, 1864 (Vol. 32, Part 2, page 588).Major G.S. Deakins was in command of the 35th Tennessee, in Granbury's Brigade, on March 31, 1865 (Vol. 47, Part 3, page 736). Major Deakins signed Major-General Patrick R. Cleburne's petition to the War Dept. in Richmond, to arm slaves, dated January 2, 1864.Major George S. Deakins was named to the Confederate Roll of Honor, for his action at the battle of Chickamauga, September 19-20, 1863, per General Order #64, dated August 10, 1864. Here is what Col. Hill had to say about Major G.S. Deakins at the battle of Chickamauga: 'In the meantime I had ordered my major to take charge of the prisoners as they arrived, and not allow the men to be running to the rear on the pretext of carrying back prisoners. He (the major) collected and sent to the rear about 75.' Also, 'Lieutenant-Colonel Roberts and Major Deakins did their whole duty in commanding the skirmishers, both day and night, and displayed great coolness and courage throughout the entire engagement, or series of engagements.' (O.R., Vol. 30, part 2, page 184 & 541).

Enlisted before the battle of Perryville Sept 23rd 1682 into Company L, He was a son of wealthy landowners the Hale Family. from haletown Japser county. He became Ill or injured and was layed up in the Hospital by February 1863 at which point he was discharged upon procuring a substitute.

Bartley had been a coal miner at Tracy City, Marion County, when he first emigrated from Ireland to the US in about 1849. He had moved to Kentucky by the time the war started but enlisted for Tennessee. September 1861--mustered in at Camp Smartt near McMinnville (TN). 1st Mountain Rifle Regiment organized from several counties in Tennessee: Grundy, Warren, Van Buren, Cannon, Sequatchie, DeKalb, Hamilton, and Bledsoe. Served through 1865. Bartley's records are listed as Stinson and Stenson. Bartley Stinson Military Service Record for the Civil War. Served in TN has his birth in 1820 Ireland. date of death 1/15/1899. He was in the Co. L. 35th Tn Mountain Rifle Reg. He was captured at Cowan , Tn July 12 1863

My Second Cousin (4th removed)/my GGGG uncle's grandson FIELD COMMANDS 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment Colonel BATTLES FOUGHT Shiloh -- 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment Cleburne's Brigade, Hardee's Corps Chickamauga -- 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment Polk's Brigade, Cleburne's Division, D. H. Hill's Corps, Right Wing (Polk), Army of Tennessee PROMOTIONS Brigadier General November 30, 1864 BIOGRAPHY Brigadier-General Benjamin J. Hill was commissioned colonel of the Thirty-fifth Tennessee upon its organization in September, 1861. During the first four months this regiment had very little hard service, but with the spring of 1862 came the stern realities of war with all its horrors. The regiment, now known as the Fifth Tennessee, was in Gen. Pat Cleburne's brigade at the battle of Shiloh, and when Cleburne was in the presence of the enemy there was sure to be sharp work. In this battle, Hill commanded for a time the left of Cleburne's brigade and several other regiments, and was highly commended for his gallantry. During the Kentucky campaign of 1862 Cleburne commanded a division, and at the battle of Richmond, Ky., Colonel Hill commanded Cleburne's brigade to the complete satisfaction of that officer, which is praise enough. This was the first brigade to strike the enemy at Richmond, and from the first volley until the close of that victorious day its progress was onward even though Hill was wounded at the battle of Richmond. At Murfreesboro, Colonel Hill, again in command of his regiment, Lucius Polk commanding the brigade, was with Cleburne's division in the very hottest part of the battle. At Chickamauga the gallant colonel won from Lieut.-Gen. D. H. Hill the following tribute: 'The extraordinary merit of Colonel Hill of the Thirty-fifth Tennessee came under my personal observation. This noble officer has been distinguished on many a hard-fought field, and has been content with a subordinate position, provided he can serve his country.' At Missionary Ridge, Cleburne's division not only held its ground, but charged the enemy and captured prisoners and colors. In this battle, Colonel Hill commanded the Thirty-fifth and Forty-eighth Tennessee regiments. During part of 1863 and 1864 he was general provost-marshal of the army of Tennessee. In the Atlanta campaign he was part of the time provost-marshal, and then again at the head of the Thirty-fifth Tennessee, which shared in the hard marching, watching and fighting of the Atlanta campaign, and toward the last was assigned to Granbury's brigade. During the Tennessee campaign of General Hood, Colonel Hill commanded a cavalry force and co-operated with Forrest in the siege of Murfreesboro. In the latter part of the year he was promoted to brigadier-general, his commission being dated November 30, 1864.
