50th Tennessee Infantry

Samuel contracted measles during the war. He was sent home and died of complications of that disease. His brother, John B. Cross served as a sergeant in the 14th Tennessee Regiment.

It appears that Thomas Neblett / Niblett from Humphreys County jointed the 50th in Waverly, TN and fought at Fort Donelson. His pay records indicted that he might have walked out the General Nathan Bedford Forrest troops, as he is later noted as being killed with the KY cav at Cross-Roads?.

Trying to locate more information on this regiment. Nelson was my Great-Great Grandfather. He was born and raised in Dickson County, Tennessee and according to my research; entered the CSA in 1861, he was present when the unit was captured at Fort Donelson and imprisoned. Any information on this unit would be greatly appreciated.

Corp. John William Trotter was my great grandfather. He was born in Montgomery County, Tennessee March 1, 1842. He was the son of Elijah Trotter and Melissa Milam. He enlisted in Clarksville in the ''Dunlop Grays'' who were sent to Ft. Donelson, Dover, TN and began working on the fort. On Dec. 25, 1861 they were formed into Company A/50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was wounded twice and captured at Nashville, TN. He was one of only 6 men to surrender at Greensboro, N. Carolina that were of the original Co.A.

R.T. Buchanan's hometown was Dover, TN

James Levi Claxton served from 1861 through 1854. He was captured by the Union Army, escaped and returned to his regiment.

George W. Gatlin served in Company B at the Battle of Fort Donelson. He received his rank due to a field promotion.

Enlisted Cumberland city,Tn Garrison Ft Donalson, Camp Chase exchanged to Vicksburg..Died 1924 was part of the Questionaire by the Gov'. And of course GGGrandfather.

Robert enlisted on 10 Feb. 1861 at Fort Donelson as 1st Sgt of Co. B 50th Tenn Infantry. Elected to 2nd Lieut. 31 Dec. 1861. He was captured at Fort Donleson 16 Feb. 1862. and sent to Johnson Island. He is exchanged at Vicksburg. His brother is with him as he was a Lieut. In Co I in the same Regt. Robert is in Tilton, Ga in 1864. His unit is short on men as it has seen some hard fighting. His unit is consolidated with other units to reorganize .

Co C 'The Wilson Grays' was an Al Company enrolled at Montgomery Co Al 9/13/1861. According to the Lindsley's Annuals the 50th suffered heavy losses during the war and only 37 men from the 50th answered final roll call. Arch was my gr gr grandfather and one of the 37 surviving men. b. 2/2/1840 d. 1/18/1920 Buried at Eastaboga Cemetery, Talladega Co. Al. He married Josephine Loftis.

Thomas Martin Grimes joined 'The Wilson Gray's' in Montgomery, Alabama on September 13, 1861. Born 1839, Died 1913 and is buried at Old Weogufka Cemetery, Coosa County, Alabama. He was my Great Great Grandfather.

Sebron Sellers, my great great grandfather, enlisted in Montgomery, AL with the Wilson Grays. In 1862 as a private, he served with the 50th Tennessee Infantry until surrender at Greensboro, NC on April 26, 1865. 499 present for duty January 1862, 37 present for surrender April 1865. Born Sept. 9, 1842, Died May 11, 1919, buried in Alton, AL

Enlisted 9 December 1861 in Company D, 1st (Colms') Tennessee Infantry Battalion which was temporarily consolidated about 1 November 1862 with the 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The consolidation became permanent 24 February 1864 with formation of the 50 Tennessee Infantry Regiment (Consolidated), and Company D was combined with Company C to form Company K. Pvt. Allen Anderson was captured by Union forces on 16 February 1862 at Fort Donelson. He appears on an undated Roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Morton, Indiana, in June 1862. He died of pneumonia at Prison Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana, on 26 April 1862 and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery. Greenlawn was closed to new burials in 1890, and by 1899 efforts to relocate it entirely were underway. During the relocation process, it was discovered that most of the graves had been robbed and the bodies stolen. In 1931 industrial development around Greenlawn Cemetery resulted in the remaining bodies of Confederate prisoners being moved to the privately owned Crown Hill Cemetery where they were interred in a mass grave known as Confederate Mound. Enlisted 9 December 1861 in Company D, 1st (Colms') Tennessee Infantry Battalion; he was 18 years old. The 1st Tennessee Infantry Battalion was commanded by Major S. H. Colms. The battalion was temporarily consolidated about 1 November 1862 with the 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was promoted 7 January 1863 to 1st corporal. and, reported, "at camp near Port Hudson, Louisiana, 21 April 1863." William Anderson's name appears on an undated register of patients in Ocmulgee Hospital, Macon, Georgia, He had been admitted on 29 March 1865 with what appears to have been a leg wound, and transferred on 18 April 1865 to an unidentified location, His name appeared on a report dated 30 April 1865 as among prisoners captured during the month of April 1865 by members of the 1st Brigade, 2nd U.S. Cavalry Division, Macon, Georgia. Enlisted Company D 50th Tennessee Infantry Sept 20 1861. Feb 16 1862 captured at Fort Donelson, imprisoned at Camp Douglas, Chicago IL. Sept 5 1862 transported to Vicksburg for prisoner exchange. Oct 31 1862 enlisted in reformed 50th TN refused enlistment bounty. March 1863 discharged by reason of medical disability. Collected TN state Veteran Pension. I have his full military records.

Born 1840 in Tennessee. He was ordered into service with the 45th Regiment Arkansas Militia (aka 38th Arkansas Infantry) Company C on Nov 26 to Dec 20, 1861 by Colonel Sam Leslie to suppress a secret organization opposed to the war. He enlisted Jan 1862 in Captain David Snodgrass company in White County in the 1st (Colms') Infantry Battalion [also called 20th Battalion], o other information on him found. In February 1864, the 1st was consolidated with the 50th (Old) Tennessee Regiment to form the 50th (New) Tennessee Regiment but I found no record of him in that regiment. Captured at Fort Donelson, Feb 16th, 1862. Wounded in arm at Chickamauga, Sept. 19th, 1863. Surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, NC, 1865.

My GGGGranpa. Joined Major Stephen Colms' 1st Tennessee Infantry Battalion at Sparta, TN. Jan.4 1862. Taken prisoner at Ft. Donelson, Feb.16 1863. Paroled/Exchanged Sept 11 1862. at Vicksburg, MS. His CMSR Lists him as 'Died at Short Creek Miss June 11, 1863. 4th Corporal at time of Death.

My 1st cousin 5x removed. Col. Cyrus A. Sugg: Battle field report from Fort Donelson states; A message from General Buckner to Colonel Sugg to 'raise a white flag over the fort' Cursing was heard both loud and deep. Taken prisoner along with 13,000 troops. Imprisoned in Boston harbour, exchanged in Mississipi. Fought at Chickamauga where his General was killed and he took over the regiment. Wounded 4 times but not seriously. Mortally wounded at the battle of Missionary ridge, 11/25/1863. Buried in the Sugg family cemetery, Adams Tn. At the time of his death, Confederate President Jefferson Davis received at least 2 letters requesting his promotion to Brigadier General. One signed by his fellow officers, and one by all of the confederate senators from Tn. News of his death was taken very hard by his regiment.

James was brother to Colonel Cyrus A Sugg.

1st cousin 5times removed. Escaped capture at Ft Doneldson and Joined Woodward's 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. was the Last Serviving confederate Veteran to Die In Trigg county Kentucky, Died In 1933.

William Lowry was my great grandfather. He enlisted in the military on Dec 2, 1861 and served under Captain Beaumont. On Feb., 16, 1862 he was captured at Fort Donelson in Dover Tn and held as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Il. On Oct. 2, 1862 he was sent to Vicksburg, Ms where he was exchanged for a Union soldier POW. He was discharged Jan. 26, 1864.

This is my great great great grandfather.Served in Co. B. Colms 1st Tennessee Battalion and in the 50th Tenn. Consolidated Infantry,Co. H.He was from Bakers Crossroads, White County,Tennessee.He enlisted in Nov.1861,with his 2 brothers,James,and Burtis.James later was captured and took the oath of allegiance,and enlisted in the Union Army.Burits was wounded during the Vicksburg campaign and later died in Miss.Another brother Mattison also served in the Union Army. My Grandfather suffered from many trials during his service but remained in the ranks until being taken prisoner after the Battle of Nashville,at the end of the war. He died in 1912.

I have no record of what happened to him died Feb 13 1862

William was a 21 year old from Cumberland City, Sullivan County Missouri. He enlists as a Pvt. in Capt. George Stacker's Co on 9 Sept. 1861 for one year. On 16 Feb 1862 he is at Fort Donaldson where he is captured and taken to Camp Douglas in Chicago Ill. He is sent to Vicksburg for exchange. His unit is reorganized and he is elected 1st Lieut. In 15 Jan 1864 he is in Capt. George W. Pease's company at Tilton Ga. His command is undergoing another reorganization with the 1st [ Colm's] Battn. He resigns and goes home on furlough. Thus ends the data in his file.

Montgomery insisted (by Lt Col RW McGavock, 12/11/1861) and was captured at Font Donelson (2/16/1862). Transported to Fort Douglas in Illinois on 8/1/1862. He was later transported to Kingston, GA where we passed on 1/22/1864. Apparently, Kingston, GA was a rehabilitation hospital for Confederates until Sherman came through.

Tapley Joined 11 Dec 1861. Enlisted at Fort Donalson where he was elected to 2nd Lieut. He was arrested [captured] there 16 Feb 1862 & sent to Camp Chase then to Johnson Island. He was exchanged at Vicksburg in Sept 1862. He was elected Captain on 23 Sept 1862 and sent on recruiting duty. at this time he was about 26 years old. He is my 2nd cousin 3 x removed.

I've been told that Edmund died at Vicksburg, but I have not seen the record.

My 3rd great grand uncle (my gr-gr-gr gm''s bro). He was a Humphreys Co., TN native. Joined regiment in May 1861 served entire war, paroled in NC in May 1865. Wounded several times, fought numerous battles, Port Hudson, Raymond, Franklin, Chickamauga, Atlanta, etc... Captured at Ft. Donelson....a real soldier and hero! What became of him after the war? I can find nothing about him after his parole. One of a handful of original members of the 50th who served (and/or survived the entire war).
