51st Tennessee Infantry

Pleas Bowman was either a brother or cousin to Josh Bowman who served in this unit. They both were married to my 2nd Great Grandmother. Pleasant Bowman in 1860 and Joshua Bowman in 1867. On Pleasant's 2 sheets of Civil War Record it says he died 29 January 1862, but I have been unable to find our anything further.

James when't into battal in 1862

Enlisted by T.G. Randle on 16 Dec 1861 at Henderson, Tennessee for a period of twelve months. Wounded at Shiloh 6 April 1862 (last date of recorded service) and sent home to Decatur (Meigs County) TN.

Lieutenant John Hardin Crouch was my Great-Great Grandfather. He enlisted as a 3rd Lieutenant in Company A of the 51st Tennessee Infantry on November 16,1861 in Tipton County Tennessee. Lieutenant Crouch was taken prisoner at the Battle of Fort Donnelson on February 16,1862 and imprisoned at Johnson Island Ohio. I don't know wether he was paroled or released or his re-patriation date. If anyone can help me with this please e-mail me.Lieutenant Crouch died in 1881 and is buried at Poplar Grove cemetary in Drummonds Tipton County Tennessee.

Alexander was enlisted by Capt J.R. Hodges at Galloway Station Tenn. on 20 Nov. 1861. He enlisted as a Pvt. and was elected to 1st Sergeant. In August he is sick at Danville, Tenn. He is assigned to Chester's Regiment. On 1 May 1863 he is elected to Captain of Co B. From July 1863 thru Feb of 1864 he signs as Commanding Officer for Co A of this Regt. March and April he is on detached service. His unit is paroled at Greensboro NC on 2 May 1865. Deo Vindice

Commissary Sergeant with Co C, 51st Tenn Inf Rgmt. My Great Grandfather in the war.

I received Josh Bowman's Military Records and found out he was Paroled June 1, 1865 at Jackson, Tennessee. There is much more information on him.

This Company was formed on Jan 2 1862..Officers were voted in that night B.M. Browder Col...Chester Seut Col...Vanderville Sergeon...Others were named the next day...My Grand Father was part of the staff in charge of supplies and food rations...he was one of few who could read and write and knew math well...

James was my Great Great Grandfather. He was discharged honorably at Chattanooga, TN around November 1862 due to 'smallness.' He was about 5'2' tall, thin, and had blue eyes. He went back to Decatur County and tended a farm near Saltillo, TN. He is buried at Gardner Cemetery in Decatur County, Tennessee.

His family still has a hardtack biscuit that he sent home to his Mother in 1863, to show her that he wasn't going hungry.

Killed at the Battle of Murfreesboro on December 31, 1862. Buried in Confederate Circle, Evergreen Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Captain Campbell is my father's father's father's father.
