He served from 2 May 1861 until 11 January 1862, when he became ill. After recuperating, he rejoined the war and served in the calvary under Forrest.

James Company under Captain B.A. James, from Smith County, TN. Mustered in at Camp Trousdale, Dec. 21, 1861. This unit was organized on January 30, 1862.

My great-great uncle. He enlisted in Co. E at Henderson Station, Tennessee on January 20, 1862. The regiment was sent to Island No. Ten and William died there of disease on March 8, 1862. His grave has never been located by the family.

Enlisted on January 20, 1862, his brothers, Ransom Timothy Jones and Carrol Vincent Jones were married to William C. Howell's sisters. Howell and Merrel Jones were close friends. Jones was captured at Island No. Ten on April 8, 1862 and later exchanged. On July 31, 1863, Jones deserted by giving himself up to Federal pickets at Pocahontas, Tennessee. He took the Oath of Alligence and returned home.
