rancis Marshall Boykin was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia on March 1, 1837. His ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and his father, General Francis Boykin, was a member of the Virginia Senate. Boykin entered the Virginia Military Institute in July 1853 and graduated in 1856. He engaged in teaching until 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a Lt. Colonel in the 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment. Boykin served throughout the war and was briefly imprisoned at Johnson's Island. After the war, he was in the tobacco business in Richmond, Virginia. Boykin married Ellen B. George, and they had three children (Hamilton, Anna, Ellen). He died on May 5, 1906 in Richmond.

Henry V. Springstone enlisted as a Pvt. on 5/31/1861 in Co. D. at the Gilmer County Court House, Glenville, Gilmer County, WV. Listed as born in the then Lewis County, occupation farmer. Henry was reported as lost and missing on the retreat from the Battle of Laurel Hill. Reported as sick in camp 9/1/1861. Henry was MWIA 12/13/1861 during the Battle of Allegheny Mountain and is buried as an unknown in a battlefield grave. His brother Joseph Benton Springstone served in the 19th Virginia Cavalry and was paroled at Charleston, West Virginia in May 1865. Henry's father John Gideon Springstone was arrested by the Union Guard in Gilmer County on charges of "aiding the Rebels" and was sent to the Union Camp Chase, Ohio as a citizen prisoner from October 1861 to January 1863.

Hill Nicholas likely saw action at the Battle of McDowell on May 8, 1862, based on his enlistment date and location. It's suspected that Nicholas was still with the 31st through the June 8 and 9, 1862 battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic. If injuries were not incurred then he would have proceeded to the Seven Days Battle from 25 June through 1 July 1862. In the 31st VA Inf Regimental Series book, Nicholas is designated as having been discharged due to disability. What led to this disability and discharge is currently unknown.

Peter Hull Warwick was my great-grandfather. He enlisted in Co. G, 31st Virginia Infantry on 29 May 1861 at Green Bank, Pocahontas County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was wounded 9 June 1862 at the Battle of Port Republic, Rockingham County, Virginia. He was still with his unit at Appomattox when Lee surrended the Army of Northern Virginia.

Due to wound disability he served the CSA Quartermaster Dept. at Richmond for the duration of the Civil War. Later elected State Auditor of West Virginia for two terms in 1892. Brothers Isaac V., Thomas B., & Joseph Johnson also served CSA. Father, William was Barbour County representative to the Virginia House of Delegates 1860-65. Medical discharge from CSA near Mt. Meridian, Va. on June 14, 1862 following Battle of Port Republic. Discharged for prolonged typhoid fever with resulting deafness. Returned to Barbour County and later served as Captain, Co. H, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. (see entry for 62nd Virginia)

Born Barbour County, WV, son of William. Enlisted Co. H, at Philippi, Barbour County, May 14, 1861. Deserted November 15, 1861. Arrested as POW in Barbour County November 25, 1861 and sent to Union POW prison at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. Paroled for exchange from Camp Chase and transferred to Vicksburg, MS. Exchanged aboard the steamer John H. Done near Vicksburg September 11, 1862. Returned to 31st Virginia and received a medical discharge for typhoid fever on January 3, 1863 for typhoid fever. Again arrested in Randolph County, WV. by Co. A, 1st West Virginia Cavalry, age 23, 5'8' inces, sallow complexion, auburn hair, sandy whiskers and gray eyes. Possibly later died in prison.

William Black Poling was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. He entered the fight for Southern Independence in October 3, 1861 in Pocahontas County now West Virginia. He was discharged in 1862 due to ill health. He died later that year at the age of 57.

Born Monterey, Highland County, VA. 8/3/1844. Enlisted as Pvt. Co. H (Barbour Greys) at Camp Allegheny, Pocohontas County, WV. on 3/28/1862. Admitted CSA Hospitals, Richmond, 5/27-6/21, 1864. Served briefly with Co. D, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry (Imboden) before being returned by CSA orders to the 31st Virginia in early 1864. Deserted and took Federal oath of allegiance on 12/22/1864 at Beverly, WV. Resided in North Dakota following Civil War but returned to Virginia and died at Staunton Hospital 12/16/1939, the oldest surviving member of Co. H, 31st Virginia Infantry. Francis is buried in CSA section, Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton.

Born 6/19/1819, son of James & Catherine Trimble. Enlisted Private, Co.H on 5/18/1862. MWIA at Battle of Cross Keys or Port Republic June 8-9, 1862. Died at the home of Miss Ewens at Mount Meridian near Port Republic, age 33. Buried Seybert Chapel Cemetery, Straight Creek, Monterey, Highland County, VA.

Anthony R. Spaur joined at the age of 47 and took four of his sons with him to fight in the conflict. He was given a disability discharge after he became injured and returned home to his family.

David was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg and died on December 19, 1862 at Winder Hospital in Richmond. He is buried at Hollywood.

Gideon was captured and finished the war at the Point Lookout POW camp, where he was discharged after taking the Oath of Allegence to the Union following the surrender at Appomattox.

Having served through out the entire conflict, John was present at Appomattox for the surrender.

Born c. 1813 in what is now the Glade District of eastern Barbour County, WV. Father of 11 children. Enlisted and elected Orderly Sgt.(Ist. Sgt), May 18, 1861, Meadowville, Barbour County WV. 5'9 1/2 inches height, dark hair, dark complexion. Served with the 31st Virginia until June 14, 1862 when he was medically discharged for disability following the Battle of Port Republic. He returned to Barbour County where he was arrested by the Union Provost Marshall on July 3, 1862 and sent to the Union Camp Chase Prison near Columbus Ohio. As part of the Dix-Hill POW exchange cartel he was sent from Columbus to Cairo, Illinois, via rail and then on August 28, 1862 was sent down the Mississippi River to Vicksburg on one of four steamers, either the 'J.S. Pringle, Champion # 3, the Emerald or the Chancellor'. Jacob was exchanged across the deck of the steamer John H. Done at Young's Point, La., just above Vicksburg, Ms. on September 11, 1862. He along with 3,900 CSA POW's were then sent by rail to the state fairgrounds adjacent to the Mississippi capitol at Jackson. Jacob perished somewhere along his trail home and never returned home. Jacob is buried in a grave unknown except to God

Jesse was born Barbour Co.,WV son of James. He enlisted May 29, 1861, Philippi, WV and was killed in action Battle of Port Republic June 9, !862, age about 21. His grave is unknown but likely buried on the battlefield.

(Jacob served as Ist Sgt., 31st Virginia Infantry) Enlisted Co. K on May 29, 1861 at Phillipi, Barbour County. Served as a Pvt., Infantry & Wagoner, in Company K from May 29, 1861 until September 23, 1864 when he was captured by Sheridan's Cavalry near Mt. Jackson, Va., one day after Battle of Fisher's Hill. Imprisoned at Point Lookout POW Camp, MD. until released by Oath, May 8, 1865. Returned to Barbour County, West Virginia until his death in February 1928. Jonathan is buried in Crossroads Cemetery, Tacy, Barbour County, West Virginia.

Solomon, son of Samuel & Elizabeth Gainer, was born Meadowville,Barbour County, West Virginia, June 30, 1841. Enlisted in Company K, 31st Virginia Infantry at Meadowville, Barbour County, May 13, 1861, WV. Captured while on picket duty during the Battle of Greenbrier River, WV., October 3, 1861. Paroled as POW from Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio August 25, 1862 and was taken by rail to Cairo, Illinois and then by steamer down the Mississippi River to near Vicksburg where he was exchanged across the deck of the steamer John H. Done on September 11, 1862.Solomon was then transferred by rail from Vicksburg, Ms. to a parole camp at the State Fair Grounds near the capitol building Jackson, Ms. from where he made his way back to Virginia. He was at Gettysburg, W.I.A. 1864 and promoted to Sergeant on July 1, 1864.Surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865, one of five men remaining of Company K. Married Mary Jane Adams of Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia in 1866. Solomon moved to Oklahoma in 1901 where he died and was buried near Doxey, Beckham Co., Oklahoma, February 3, 1934, survived by his wife, 9 surviving children, 51 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

Present and paroled April 9, 1865 with the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Along with Sgt. Solomon Gainer, Frederick was one of the five remaining soldiers of Co. K at Appomattox Court House.

Cpl Johnson was born Barbour Co., WV. 1843, the son of Peter & Mary. Enlisted Co. K, 31st Virginia Infantry, May 18, 1861 at Meadowville. Deserted April 19, 1862. Unauthorized re-enlistment in 2nd Co. E, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. Present as of April 30, 1863. Deserted, in Braxton Co., WV. September 17, 1863. Captured and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio November 3, 1863. Later transferred to Rock Island Prison, Illinois on January 17, 1864. Enlisted in U.S. Army for frontier service October 17, 1864. Returned to Barbour Co. post war.

My husband's 3rd great grand uncle, Albert G. Phillips was born in 1841 in Barbour Co. VA (now) WV. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Meadowville, WV on May 18, 1861. He mustered out of that unit on April 19, 1862 at Shenandoah Mountain, WV. He died in Barbour County, WV in 1919.

Cortland Phillips, born Barbour County, (now) WV. in 1842, son of Jacob and grandson of Joseph & Mary. Enlisted Co. K, 31st Virginia Infantry, May 18, 1861 at Meadowville, WV. Wounded in foot at Freeman's Ford, VA, 8/22/1862. Cortland was wounded in the hip by gunshot at Gettysburg near Culp's Hill, July 3, 1863. He was placed in a Gettysburg CSA field hospital where he was captured by Union forces and later exchanged as POW. Hospitalized 4/64-8/64. Captured Strasburg, VA., 10/19/1864 and released 6/16/65. After war Cortland married Amanda Harris and in the 1870's moved to Maryland where he died near Baltimore in 1925.

2nd Lt.-Captain, Co K. Born near Meadowville, Glade District, Barbour County, WV., August 24, 1839. Raised Valley Furnace, Barbour County. Wounded in action 6 times including Camp Allegheny, Sharpsburg and for the last time at the Wilderness. Medically discharged from CSA February 1865 from Charlottesville, General Hospital, VA. Paroled at Charlottesville May 17, 1865. Capt. Phillips returned to Valley Furnace as a farmer, author and teacher. He died October 24, 1895. Buried Shiloh Cemetery, Valley Furnace.
