7th Virginia Cavalry

Richard was the brother of Turner Ashby and served in the 7th with his brother. He was killed in battle in 1861.

My paternal grandmother, Chloe Evelyn Ashby, was a cousin of Turner's and his brother Richard.Her Grandparents moved from Virginia before the war and settled in Kentucky where she was born in 1898.

Robert Lucas was born and lived most of his life in Scott Co. He is buried in Dungannon. He was born in 1841, dies in 1933. His headstone says he was in 'TRP I' of the 7th VA Cav; I assumes that means Co. I? When he died he was the last living 'civil War' veteran in the county. He lived all his life in Virginia. He is my great X 3 grandfather on my mother's side(hence the reason for different last names; Lucas is my mother's maiden name).

Asst Surgeon, 7th VA Cav Rgt & later the surgeon of the 11th VA Cav Rgt, 1863. Dr. Settle was eventually captured on Feb. 18, 1865--his 29th birthday--in Warren County, Va., and sent to Fort McHenry near Baltimore. His arrest papers bore the notation: “Guerrilla--not to be exchanged during the war--by order of Major General Sheridan.” The notation reflects the hatred that developed among Federal officers for partisan rangers such as John Singleton Mosby, the “Gray Ghost” of the Confederacy. The war ended less than two months later, and Settle was released from prison May 4 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. He died in 1920.

Wm. transferred to the 7th Va. Cav. at the end of his initial enlistment in the 4th Va. Inf. Wm was transferred to the 14th, 24th &25th Battalion and 35th Battalion Va. Cav and served three additional years. At the end of this enlistment he reenlisted in the 4th Va. Inf and remained there throughout the course of the war.

Enlisted 01 JUN 1861 in Luray, VA. Was a prisoner of war, arrested in Romney, WV 26 OCT 1861, transferred to Vicksburg from Camp Chase in Ohio to be exchanged 25 AUG 1862.

My 2nd great grandfather was born 8/23/1835 in Yancey, NC Died 08/18/1912 in East Stone Gap, VA; Buried in Riverview Cemetery in East Stone Gap, VA.

Enlisted from Luray, Page County, VA, on Aug 15, 1864. He lived at Alma at the time, and died Craig, Missouri in 1916.

Henry C. Miller was born September 28, 1830, died March 14, 1902. He is buried next to his wife, Elizabeth A. Hutchinson, born November 5, 1837, died March 17, 1920 in Gerrardstown, West, Virginia, Gerrardstown Presbyterian Cemetery. Henry C. Miller is my great, great grandfather.

At the Battle of Totopotomy Creek (May 28-30, 1864), Pvt. Shaw shot Pvt. Simon Geary (Co. A 140th Regiment Pa. Infantry) in the arm. He nursed Geary and took him back to West Virginia.
