F.A. Cairns lived in Petersburg, serving in the unit that was raised from that location. He sat out part of the war due to fever, but finished the war as a second or first lieutenant. He was age 41 at the outbreak of hostilities. After the war he taught quantitative analysis at Columbia University in New York, and he married Mary Jay Snowden, sister of Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden, of Memphis Tennessee and of substantial Confederate fame.

Thomas W. Bayly enlisted in the 39th Virginia Infantry in 1861. Colonel Charles Smith formed eleven companies into a regiment that was accepted into the Confederate service in late September 1861. The regiment was ordered to join the remainder of the Confederate Army on the western Shore but due to Federal activity in the Chesapeake Bay and on the Eastern Shore that was impossible. As a result the adjutant and Inspector General office issued Special Order No 20 on January 25, 1862. The order disbanded the regiment and mustered the men out of service with an effective date of Feb 3, 1862.

He enlisted on 20 June 1861 Downings Wharf, South of Exmore, Northampton Co. From 12 July he was bearing dispatches from the Regiment to Richmond and back.
