My great, great grandfather has 23rd VA Infantry CSA on his gravestone in Cedar Bluff, VA. However, he is not listed in the 23rd VA regimental history. Any info regarding this would be appreciated.

Was supposed to have served from 1861 to 1865 as a private. Was said to have been captured and served as a Prisoner of War.

Military grave marker at his grave site shows service in Co. B 23rd Virginia Infantry.

C. C. Scott was a Sergeant upon entering the 23rd Regiment and a Captain upon leaving. We believe he was married to Ella Alvey and is buried near her at the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

Anderson Jr ***my Grandmother, their issue was Helen Marion Anderson my mother ++Norvell Roberston b. 22May1765 Buckingham VA, elder son of Jeffrey Roberston, joined the militia in May1781 and following service in Yorktown Sep1781 returned to work at the blacksmith trade until 1786 when he journeyed to Burke County where he again served in the militia during an indian uprising. He married Sarah Powell 7Jul1791 had 10 children and d. 16Sep1855 in Covington County, Mississippi

Musician Company D. Born ca. 1827 Tazewell County, Va. Brother to Samuel W. Dillion who served in the 60th Virginia Infantry.

Enlisted as a Private on 23 May 1861 at the age of 34. Died of disease on 25 April 1862 at Harrisonburg, VA.

I was researching my grandmother's family looking to see if I could find a Confederate service record for my great grandfather. Instead I found the grave of his brother, William Stephen Shepherd. He is buried in the Bybee Road Baptist Church Cemetrry in Fluvanna County, VA. His grave stone indicates he served in the 23rd VA Infantry, Company D, and died on 14 May 1863, apparently from wounds received at the battle of Chancellorsville.

Enlisted 22 August, 1861 @ Tazewell County Court House by Capt. Cecil for the duration of the war. Some records have his rank listed as Private.

Twice wounded, at Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Captured at Gettysburg. Prisoner of war at Johnson''s Island

Son of Fielder Barnes & Harriet (Gholson) Barnes. Per 1860 U.S. Census was salesman for merchant, A. Dreifus, In Halifax County, VA. Company E "Brooklyn Grays", 23rd Virginia Infantry, 3rd Brigade, Valley District, Dept. of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. Enlisted on 5/7/1861 at Brooklyn Store & Post Office, Brooklyn, Halifax County, VA., he was mustered into Captain William Haymes' Company, 23rd Virginia Volunteers, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company E, 23rd Virginia Infantry.) Listed on June & July 1861 Roll as Absent, Sick leave. Mortally Wounded In Action 3/23/1862 in 1st Battle of Kernstown, VA. The 23rd Infantry Regiment completed its organization in May, 1861. Its members were recruited at Richmond and in the counties of Louisa, Amelia, Halifax, Goochland, Prince Edward, and Charlotte. This regiment participated in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, saw action at Greenbrier River, and took part in Jackson's Valley operations. It reported 49 casualties at First Kernstown.

Lt. Samuel Peter Hales was the son of a doctor and himself an MD before and after the War. Following the death of his 1st wife who bore 2 children, he married a widow of means and inherited 11 step children, then fathered 2 more. He enlisted for 1 year in Co. E on May 7, 1861 in Halifax County, VA and was appointed 1st Lt. He served in the WV Campaign and briefly commanded the Co in late 1861 following the capture of the Captain. He went on sick leave from Winchester in Jan., 1862 and was eventually dropped from the rolls. One of his step sons, Captain Richard Polk Jennings was wounded 4 times and commanded Co.E late in the War. Lt.(Dr.) Hales died in Halifax Co in 1894 after contracting erysipelas from a patient. He is buried at Oak Level Presbyterian Church in Halifax County.

Enlisted at Brooklyn5/7/61. Commanded Co until captured 7/13/61 Carricks Ford. Paroled 7/16/61.

Enlisted 1861 in Charlottesville,Va, before Battle of Cedar Mountain. Furloughed 1 month for medical ,otherwise present and accounted for. The 23 Va Inf was the “go to “ unit . Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse on April 1865 . My GGG Grandfather .

Samuel Carter Williams was born in Pittsylvania Co., Va in 1832. Both of his parents died when he was a child and he and a surviving brother were raised by grandparents who owned a large plantation on the Banister River. After being educated, in 1850 he worked as a mercantile clerk and belonged to the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge in Danville. On Dec. 20,1853 he married Elizabeth Ann Fallen. They had five children. Around 1855 he purchased a 998 acre tobacco plantation near Paces in SW Halifax County, VA. On May 7, 1861 he enlisted at Brooklyn as 2nd LT in Co. E, the Brooklyn Grays. This unit fought for most of the war in Allegheny Johnson's Division. He was elected Captain in May, 1862, paricipated in Kernstown and later was wounded in the arm at McDowell,captured, exhanged and rejoined his unit in August. He was present for duty thereafter until he was KIA, participating in Sharpsburg and all of the major ANV battles including Culp's Hill. Williams was killed on Nov. 27, 1863 in an assault on Union forces at Paynes Farm after his column, part of Steuart's Brigade, was ambushed on Raccoon Ford Road. The 23rdVA sustained 30% casualties at Kernstown and was commended by Jackson. Captain Williams is cited by name three times in the O.R.'s for bravery and leadership, following McDowell, Chancellorsville and Payne's Farm. Williams is buried in the family cemetery on the site of his former plantation and the plot is maintained by descendants.

April 24, 1861 Martin elisted at Fredricks Hall in Lousia County May 1861 23rd regiment was formed in Richmond at Richmond Fairgrounds, they left on a the train through Louisa to Staunton. Battle of Kernstown,( Martin wounded till April 1863) May 10 1864 ( Martin is captured ) May 12 1864 another battle at the Mule Shoe in Spotsylvania, ( prisoners were marched to Bell Plain ) May 20 1864 Martin sent from Bell Plain to Fort Delaware April 24,1865 Martin died with pneumonia, burried at Finn''s Point National Cemetery

My great, great, grandfather enlisted in March, 1862. He was twice woulded in action but served until of the end of the war. He was born in Spotsylvania, VA in 1835 and married Ann Elizebeth Sizer in 1854. He had four childeren.

Was living in Patrick County, VA.

Andrew Crawford enlisted in May 1861. He was elected Captain after Armistead Bailey resigned.

My 5th Great Grandfather was a 23rd Regiment, Virginia Infantry Confederate Soldier in Company K. I would like to get any information on his company, pictures or documents for our family tree.

Pvt. Goode, from Charlotte Co.Va., is My Great Grandfather. William was also in the 22nd Va. and the Staunton Hill Va. Light Artillery.
