Son of my gr-gr-gr-grandmother Catharine Talbot Bates. One of six brothers that served the Confederacy. Born as a twin brother to Cain Bates on October 1, 1845 in Scottsburg Virginia. Died June 6, 1920 in Pineville, Louisiana. Has a Confederate grave marker in Slone Cemetery near Mansfield, Louisiana. Enlisted December 3, 1863 in Petersburg Virginia. Shown on Compamy records for clothing issued for the 3rd Qtr. of 1864. Listed on a 'ROLL OF PRISONERS OF WAR belonging to the Army of Northern Virgina who have been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee C.S.A. commanding said Army, to Lieut. Genl. U.S. Grant, commanding Armies of the United States. Done at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 10, 1865'. The roll lists him as 'paroled'. Applied for and received a Confederate Soldiers Pension in Louisiana on June 7, 1913.

Enlistment in November 1863 at Peterburg Virginia. Shown on Comapny records for receipt of clothing in April, July, and December of 1864. Applied and received a Confederate Soldiers Pension in Louisiana on August 1, 1908.

First Cousin of William F. Guerrant.

Three of my ancestors enlisted in Company C, 44th Virginia Infantry Regiment on the same day, 6 June 1861. William F. Guerrant and John W. Guerrant (both of Buckingham County) were 1st cousins and mustered in as Privates. John H. Guerrant, a distant cousin from Goochland County, enlisted along with the other two on 6 June 1861 and took the rank of Quartermaster. I'm sure all 3 cousins knew each other and planned to enlist together.

Benjamin fought in fredricksburg and was caputured and sent to point lookout Mayland prison then transferred to Elmira New York prison.If anyone has info on the 44th co d please feel free to contact me .

Not necessarily my relative, but found him using Ancestry.com and the info was compiled by Ross Houston. He was mustered in on 6 Aug 1861 at 'Isbell's Store' and I see that an Isbell is indeed a member of the 44th. Mustered out on 21 Sep 1864 at Elmira, NY so I assume he was a prisoner at the time.

J.F. Hamilton was shot by two minnie balls below the right knee on 14 Oct 1864 at Bristoe Station. Both bones were broken and he was incapacitated due to the wound.

Great Grandfather. Served with brothers, William W. and John T. Howard from Fluvanna Co., VA. Napoleon was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, held prisoner at Pt. Lookout, Md., where he was later released.

My great uncle. Born 1840, died August 21, 1861 in Pocahontas County, VA (now WVA). He was born and raised in Palmyra, Fluvanna Co. VA., attended the Fluvanna Military Institute and was a student for two years at the University of Virginia prior to Virginia's secession in April 1861. He then left the University and helped to organize the Fluvanna Hornets, which became Co. F, 44th VA Infantry. He was accidentally shot and killed while in camp with the 44th near Cheat Mountain. I have his diary, begun in Jan. 1861 and kept up until the last entry on Aug. 20, 1861, one day before his death. I also have numerous old letters from Frank to various members of his family, and also his desk that he used while he was a student at UVA. He is buried at his mother’s family (Timberlake) home, Belle Air, in Albemarle Co. VA.

My Great Grandfather, John James Ranson was born in Cumberland County, Va. in 1836, and died sometime after 1910. He unit fought in many Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania battles.He was captured at Belle Plains, Spottsylvania, County, Va. on May 12 1864 and taken prisoner to Fort Delaware, Del. until late June 1865.

Entered as a private in Co.G 44th Regiment, Jones Brigade, Randolph Guard, Farmville, Prince Edward Co. around 11th June,1861; became Captain at Chancellorsville (after Capt.Wm. P. Walker, of CO.G, was killed at same battle); was wounded at Gaines Mill, June 27, 1862 and also wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863; was captured, along with his entire co., at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 12,1864; was imprisoned at Point Lookout, St. Mary''s Co., MD for a short while after which he was transferred for 14 months to Fort Delaware; returned home to Farmville.

William Henry Clare was from Amelia County Va. He was a carpenter and worked on the original court house in Amelia County Va.

Full name 'Walter Fabius Maximus Moring'. Son of William Wyatt Moring. Maintained a personal diary throughout the war that surivives today in the Virginia state archives. Post war, he was a coal and lumber merchant between Baltimore, MD and Chicago, IL. Died at age 42 and is buried in Chicago, IL.

Born 1818 at the Moring home place in Prince Edward County. Father of Walter F.M. Moring also of 'H' company. Enlisted with his son shortly after the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. He was discharged late in 1861 for being 'over age'. Was listed as 'sheriff' in 1850 Amelia County, VA census.

John enlisted 8 June at Amelia Court House: His career was cut short by injury shortly after enlistment . Remarks: Absent with out leave since 2 July . His name appears on a register of payments to discharged soldiers , date of register 31 July 1861. He was paid $11.00 and medically discharged. The document does not state nature of the disability.
