My 3rd Great Grandfather enlisted, along with his son William 'Lige' Elijah Neely (my 2nd great grandfather), on July 1, 1861 in Stock Creek, Scott County, Virginia by Capt. John M Vermillion (Stock Creek Greys). Mustered into service on July 6, 1861 in Abingdon, Virginia by Col.John A Campbell. The Stock Creek Greys became Company A in 1862

Enrolled in July 1, 1861 at Stock Creek, Scott County VA by John M. Vermillion. Mustered into service on July 6, 1861 in Abingdon, VA by Col. John A. Campbell. Private in Captain John M Vermillion's Company (Stock Creek Greys), Virginia Volunteers. Stock Creek Greys became Company A in 1862. Discharged in 1865 at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse (according to his Civil War Pension Application).

Born in the western part of Virginia in 1841, Abraham and two of his brothers served in the Army of Northern Virginia. He enlisted in June of 1861 and was surrendered in June of 1865. After the War he and his wife Mary (Fleenor) moved to Illinois. About 1900 Abraham moved his family to Sharp County, Arkansas where he filed a pension in 1904. He died in 1923 in Sharp County.

David Wesley Mink served in Co.B, 48th VA Inf. Regt. from the very beginning until the parole at Appamattox, except for a three month POW experience in Ft. Delaware before his prisoner exchange. His CW pension was granted from the state of Virginia and is recorded. Co.B started the CW with 95 men, and at the Appamattox parole, David Wesley Mink was one of only 4 men present from Co.B. David was my great-uncle, my grandfather Andrew Jordan's older brother.

Moses Colley Mink was captured at battle of Spotsylvannia C.H., sent to Pt. Lookout,MD and several months later transferred to Elmira Prison Camp where he died at the age of 18 on 8-Mar-1865. He is buried in Woodlawn National Cemetary, Gravesite # 2384.He was one of four Mink brothers in Company B, 48th Virginia Infantry Regiment, including: David Wesley Mink, Wiley B Mink, and William James Mink. These men were all my grandfathers Andrew Jordan Mink's older brothers and were my great-uncles.

Wiley B. Mink was captured with his brother Moses Colley Mink at the battle of Spottsylvania Court House. They were both imprisoned at Pt. Lookout, MD.prison; Wiley B. was exchanged at Aikens' Landing near Richmond about 18 Sept 1864. His brother Moses was sent to Elmira Prison on 30 Jul 1864, dying there 7 months later on 8 Mar 1865. Wiley B Mink applied for a CW pension from the state of TN.

William James Mink enlisted in the 48th Inf. Regt.on 26 Mar 1862, joining his other three brothers in Co. B.

James Lowry Montgomery, a farmer from Washington county, enlisted in the Confederate Army 6/20/1861. He was taken as a POW 7/8/1864 near Harpers Ferrey, was sent to Old Capital Prison 7/23/1864 and to Elmira 7/25/1864 and released on oath on 7/3/1865.

One of 6 brothers who were born in modern WV lived in Ohio and came south to fight for the Confederacy. Francis was my 3rd GG Uncle

Captain Henry W. Osborne and the unit traveled 40 miles, arriving in Abingdon on 17 June. As of April 1862 the Osborne Ford Independents were designated Company C.

BETWEEN BROTHERS: p 40 George Washington Blevins Private, Company C, 48th Virginia Infantry (CSA) enlisted on May 1, 1861. Hospitalized on September 19, 1862 at Richmond, VA with Diarrhea. Returned on October 22, 1862. His father, Linkhorn, served in the county militia and his brother, Andrew Jackson, served in the Confederate Army.

Major Faris (1833 to 1911) was my grate,grate Grandfather on my mother's side. Major Faris's mother was a Dugan.

Thomas J. Fisher, son of Levi Fisher, was half-brother to my g-grandfather Wm. G. Fisher. Don't know if he survived war or not. Lot of bloody battles.

Son of Amos Hall.

Served in the 48th from March 2, 1862 until his desertion 22 Apr 1864. He then joined the 3rd North Carolina Infantry, US Army, receiving an honorable discharge 8 Aug 1865 at Knoxville.

Killed at Chancellorsville May 2,1863.

Captured Spotsylvania Court House 5/12/64. POW Point Lookout 5/18/64 to 7/30/64. POW Elmira 8/2/64 to 6/19/65 when released on oath, 5'11', florid complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes in 1865.

Enlistment: Nickelsville, Scott County, Virgninia, age 23, 7/2/61. Company: Nickelsville Spartan Band Roster, Company E Present thru 10/15/61. Furloughed reenlistment leave 2/13/62. Courtmartialed by 4/16/64, guilty of enlisting in another company without proper discharge. Sentence of 12 months hard labor with ball and chain commuted and he was ordered back to duty. Captured Spotsylvania Court House 5/12/64. POW Point Lookout 5/18/64 to 9/13/64 when died, dysentery.

He enlisted on June 26, 1861. He served as a Private in H Company in the 48th Virginia Infantry Regimen. The 48th was made up of men from the following 5 counties; Scott, Washington, Smyth, Rusell and Lee. He served from June 26, 1861 Until April 9, 1865 When he was mustered out with Distinguished Service. They belonged the Army of Northern Virginia; Second Corps, furst division, Cammanding Officer Jonathan Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson of both; 2nd brigade, General John M. Jones; 48th Vriginia Infantry Regiment, Col. T. S. Garnett. His unit was part of the Army of North Virginia, Major General Janathan Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackso, (soon to become II Corps. for the grand army of the South), brigade commander, General J.R. Jones, regiment commander, Col. T. S Garnnett. The regiment was mustered into active service on April 21, 1861 for a period of 3 years. The 48th was made up of men from the following 5 counties; Scott, Washington, Smyth, Rusell and Lee. He served from June 26, 1861 Until April 9, 1865 When he was mustered out with Distinguished Service.
