My great grandfather on my fathers side. I knew my grandfather (Joseph's son) and he told me about him.

Marcus D.L. Haynes (Marcus DeLafayette Haynes) Born June 22, 1843, in Floyd County Virginia, he was a farmer who enlisted at Floyd County Courthouse September 16, 1861, at the age of 18. Taken Prisoner of War November 25, 1863, on retreat from Missionary Ridge Tennessee (per February 28, 1865 muster), he was sent to Rock Island Illinois, a prison camp located on the Mississippi River. Smallpox, Pneumonia, and Diarrhia claimed 679 prisoners and guards there, from December 1863 to February of 1864. By the end of July 1864, the Confederate Cemetery had a population of over 1,300, fully two-thirds of the prisoner deaths that were to occur during the life of the camp, which had been in existence only eight months. It is estimated that the peak population of the camp, at one time, was about 8,600. On January 22, 1867, Lafayette married Elizabeth Frances Martin, at the home of Stokley Martin in Henry County Virginia. They had seven children: 1. George W. (Willie) 2. Eliza M. Victoria (Victoria) Died in 1975 at the age of 106. 3. Isaac Newton (Ike) 4. Elvira Teressie (Ressie) 5. Benjamin Stokley (Ben) 6. Robert Lafayette (Rob) 7. An Unnamed Male Marcus DeLafayette Haynes died July 28, 1881, while cleaning the well of the Blackberry Church in Bassett (Henry County, Virginia). He was layed to rest in the Haynes Cemetery, Philpott Dam Rd., in Henry County.

My first cousin four times removed. (His father Eli was the brother of Arabella Phlegar, the mother of Jonas Harman''s wife Martha.) Enlisted in the 54th Virginia Infantry as a Lieutenant 1st Class and was eventually promoted to Full Captain. After the war he became a respected judge. He also represented Montgomery County in the Virginia State Senate from 1903 to 1907.

My 2nd cousin four times removed. (His grandmother''s sister had a daughter named Arabella Phlegar who was Jonas Harman''s mother-in-law.) Enlisted as a Private in 54th Virginia Infantry at the age of 21 on April 15, 1861. He was wounded by an enemy shell at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, losing part of his right arm.

Jobe Epperly is my great-great-great grandfather who enlisted into the 54th, Co. A. He was from Floyd Co. Va.

This was my great, great Grandfather he was taken as a POW on May 16, 1864 at Resaca Ga. After the war he returned to Virginia and lived with his wife and children as a farmer until 1914. He was buried in the Agnew Cemetery, Franklin County Va.

There were five Correll's listed on the muster rolls in 1863. Four were Privates, and one was listed Asa Sargent. George Correll is my great, great, great Grandfather. I believe one of his Sons fought along side, but I'm still researching. I'm researching the other Correll's also. If you have any info, please contact. Thank you

George Valentine Correll (17 Jun 1845 - 13 Sep 1913) was the son of George Correll (1814 - 1906). He is my first cousin 5x removed. On 24 Mar 1863, he enlisted into Co. C, 54th VA Infantry at Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., VA. He was wounded in action at Chickamauga, GA on 20 Sep 1863. On 22 Jun 1864, he was captured at Marietta, GA and taken as a POW at Mt. Zion Church and sent to Camp Morton, IN until 15 Mar 1865 when he was exchanged. After his release, he was sent to Chimborazo Hospital #2 in Richmond from 24 – 29 Mar 1865.

Older brother of my great-great-grandfather Jonas Harman; enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 54th Virginia Infantry on October 1, 1861. He was later promoted to 1st Sergeant. He died on March 2, 1862, at Castle Wood, Virginia.

Left behind on field of battle, nursed to health by local resident but did not return home to Floyd Co., VA to his wife and family. Settled in Kentucky and married 15 FEB 1864 at Breckinridge Co. to Miss Rebecca Burten (Burton.) In JUN 1903 was presented the Southern Cross of Honor by the Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY United Daughters of the Confederacy Ben Hardin Helm Chapter #126. Died 12 JAN 1909 at Vertrees, Hardin Co., KY. Buried in the Kasey Family Cemetery on the Hardin/Breckinridge County line.

Died from the measles in 1862.

Died in prison on January 12, 1865 of chronic diarrhea. Buried in Confederat portion of Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

He enlisted on 3/3/63 at Blackwater Virginia, present on 12/31/63. On clothing receipt, dated 4/14/64.Applied for pension in 1900 in Pine Creek District, Carroll County Virginia. Diappoved because he was able to work.L

According to 1903 disability pension application, James A. Slaughter served in the 54th Virginia Infantry, Co. G, under Col. Trigg and Capt. George Hylton Turman and Capt. Jeremiah Spence.

Enlisted April 7, 1862 at Richmond Va. Assigned to Teamster Detail, Company H. Captured July 3, 1863 at Elks River Tenn. and sent to P.O.W. Camp Chase Ohio, later to Camp Douglas Ill. Pvt. Howery survived captivity and was released June 15, 1865. Issac Howery died Feb.7, 1898 and is buried in Floyd Virginia.

He married Ann Elizabeth Mackey (b. 1831 in Columbia, Tennessee) in 1848 in Bedford Co. Virginia. They had 4 children. Grandison G. Leftwich died of an illness in 1863 while serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and was buried in the Confederate Section of the Old City Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia. ----- Film Number M382 roll 33 (4th Cousin 3 times removed)

Enlisted in Company K, 54th Virginia Infantry, March 3, 1862; in Salem. Due $50 re-enlistment bounty. Present December 31, 1863. Taken POW at Marietta, Georgia, on June 6, 1864. Sent to Camp Morton, Indiana. Exchanged March 4, 1865. In Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, on March 13, 1865 with chronic bronchitis. He previously served in Company C, 28th Virginia Infantry. Born September 27, 1837; Died April 6, 1917; buried in the Crawford Cemetery, New Castle, Craig County, Virginia. Confederate Disability Applications and Receipts, November 1887: "Uriah McD. Crawford deposes & says that he was a soldier in the late war in Company C./28th Va. Regt, and that while serving as such soldier in said 28th Va Regt. was discharged on occasion of disability by sickness on about Dec 1861 and recovered at home some months; he enlisted in the 54th Va Regt. (Co. K) and while serving the 54th Va. Regt., in the line of duty was wounded in the right side on a forced march on the railroad by the box car jumping the track near Knoxville Tenn. In the year 1863 being thrown from the box violently on the ground an by reason of said wound there incurred is a much wounded as if he had lost a limb, He has never received any aid from any source. He was also wounded in battle at Marietta, Georgia, in the year 1864 by a piece of shell on the top of the head which disables him as much at times as the other and that he has no means of subsistence but by physical labor and that he always has been a citizen of Virginia." Died April 6, 1917 in Craig County, Virginia.
