56th Virginia Infantry

Cicero A. Coleman, from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, enlisted into the Confederate Army on 1 March 1864 and was drafted into Company A, 56th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 9 March 1864. He died at Chimborazo on 4 August 1864. He is my great(x3) Grandfather.

E.J. Nelson Private Company A 56th Va Inf. He is buried at Rock Springs Baptist Church Townsville, NC. His middle name was often used first as in James E. Nelson.

Age:18 at Chaffin Farm Lt. Francis Green Jones Enlisted John in the Ebenezer Grays, Co. E, 56th Va. Infratry Regiment on 17 Jan. 1864 He fought in many battles including The Battle of the wilderness (May 1864), the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse (May 1864), the Battle of Cold Harbor (June 1864) and was wounded at Petersburg. He was on duty when Gen. Lee ordered the Retreat on 2 April 1865. He made it to Farmville where he was captured on 2 April 1865. He was held at Point Lookout Md. untill 23 June 1865 when he was released.

Thomas J. Corker was wounded at Darbytown, Virginia during the Seven Days Battle June 30, 1962. He is my 2nd great grandfather, born in Louisa County, Virginia.

My first cousin five times removed. Enlisted July 12 1861 at Wylliesburg, Virginia. Served until the surrender at Appomattox, Virginia. At age seventy-three, on March 5 1909, he was admitted to the Robert E. Lee - Confederate Soldiers' Home. Complexion-fair, Height-6'0'. He died at the Confederate Soldiers' Home on January 10, 1911, and is buried in the soldier's section of Hollywood Cemetery.

Captured at Hatcher's Run, March 11 1865. POW, Point Lookout, Maryland. Released June 12 1865. Complexion-light, hair-dark brown, eyes-blue, height-6'1'.

Edward was the brother of George A. Lipscomb,and was also from Charlotte County,Virginia.They were in Company G (Charlotte Defenders),both volunteered for duty in 1861,and remained in service until 1865.

George was my great great grandfather,in 1860 he was the Constable of Charlotte County Virginia,then again after the war in 1865,he was born in 1828 and died in 1909,his brother also served in the 56th Virginia also.

Born abt 1843 Mecklenburg, VA, died after 1870. My 3rd cousin 4x removed.

Enlisted with his younger brother Marcellus Lockett, who also survived the war.

This is my great-grandfather; wounded at South Mountain; captured while serving at Fox's or Turner's Gap during South Mountain battle; treated and paroled at Hagerstown; walked home on crutches to Buck's Elbow Mountain, Virginia. He originally enlisted in the Whitehall Guards, believe with his brother, William

Enlisted on 05/03/1862 in Richmond. He is listed as a POW at Sharpsburg. His release date is not listed. He is present for the 07/63 - 12/63 roll. The roll of 7/64 - 8/64 shows that he was exchanged with a man in Company D, 46th Virginia Regiment.

Henry T. Gibson was wounded during Pickett''s charge at Gettysburg on July 3rd, 1863. He was captured and taken to a pow hospital in Baltimore, Md where he succombed to his wounds on August 19th, 1863.

Enlisted 15 June 1861, Reeces Church. Appears on Company Muster Rolls and/or payroll forms with a few gaps throughout war. Started out as 2nd Corporal, ended up as Private (why?). Appears on Register of CSA General Hospital, Farmville, VA 20 August-7 November 1862, no cause given, 'Pr Qrs' = 'Private Quarters?' 1863 partial Muster Rolls show he is doing 'Detached Service.' 1864 partial Muster Rolls show him doing Provost Guard, Pickett's Division.' Throughout war he shows up as member of Co. I, 56th VA. Paroled as a POW 11-21 April 1865 by 36 Mass. Vols. at Farmville, VA. Looking for more information on Stanard. Anybody know if there's a POW list for the Battle of Fort Donelson? Or Muster Roll/Casualty list for the Battle of Gaines Mill and/or other battles? Thank you for any help you can give. Stanard was my great-grandfather's brother.

Company I (The Charlotte Greys) formed on the left flank of the regiment, July 3, 1863 to make the charge. Pvt Hammersley made the charge and somewhere in the vicinity of the Angle, he was wounded and captured. His exact whereabouts are unknown until July 6 when he shows up on a prisoner roster. He spends the rest of the war in yankee pow camps and is paroled in Feb 1865.

Samuel Clay Newcomb born Nov 4, 1846. Lived at Formosa, Charlotte County, Va. Enlisted Co I (Charlotte Grays), 56th VA Infantry, at Petersburg, Fall 1863. The 56th was mostly captured at Five Forks, those not captured joined other units. Samuel joined with Co E, 22nd Battalion VA Inf. Captured Ap 6 1865, at Saylors Creek. Sent to Point Lookout prison MD. Released June 15, 1865. Samuel died Jan 7, 1933. Samuel's great great grandson,Stanley Foster is a member of Charlote County Grays SCV Camp 1964. Would love to hear from anyone with more info on 56th.

Is there a Regimental roster available? I would like to hear from others with a relative in the 56th Virginia Regiment...especially Company I. They were from Charlotte County and called themselves the Charlotte Grays.

Enlisted in Mechanicsville, VA 6 July 1861. Trained at Hermitage Fairgrounds in Richmond.

Born: Nov 26 1807,Red Sulphur Springs Amherst VA. D:Jan 1880 Monroe VA. Enlisted: Jun 8 1861 Mechanicsburg Va.captured POW Gettysburg Pa. July 4 1863 sent to Point Lookout MD. Sept 15 1863 ,Paroled Feb 18 1865 Point lookout MD.

On 3/11/1864 he was conscripted to and assigned to Co. K, 56th VA Inf. Married 6/14/1864. He was AWOL on his payroll slip dated 7/18/1864 and he lost 7 months soldiers pay for his honeymoon. In and out of hospital until the war ended with a hernia and chronic diarrhea. Many of his family members died of TB.

Enlisted 6 Aug. 1861 in 56th VA Infantry as a Sergeant and promoted to 2nd Lt. 13 Aug. 1861. Elected 1st Lt. 6 Sept. 1861 and resigned 26 Oct. 1861 to join CO. A 24th VA Calvary, as a Sergeant. The 24th VA Calvary was originally a Regiment raised locally to defend Richmond against Yankee Calvary raids.
